Ducks need their youth to take strides particularly in the scoring dept. In the Bob Murray years, ANA seemingly has drafted versatile (being able to play multiple positions, 2-way guys) vice someone being really good at one thing (like a scoring winger). It's kinda resulted in a big jumble on top 9 fowards. With the exception of Terry, you could just shuffle the deck of the Top 9 and it pretty much all looks the same.
In the Verbeek era, there seems to be more of an effort to find/add specific role type players. Killorn (scoring winger, hasn't worked out super well this season but injuries to everyone hasn't helped), Gudas (crease clearing kind of player), Vatrano (scoring winger), Johnston (enforcer).
Even in their drafts, you can kinda see how they think they'll shake out:
Defensive D (Warren, Hinds, Konnor Smith)
Offensive D (Luneau, Dionicio, Mintyukov)
Scoring, north-south type guys F (Sidorov, Myatovic, Carey Terrance)
Defensive F (Gaucher, Hvidston)
It's very nice for a change. I hope the TDL and the offseason continue the trend to define the roster more by shipping out/bringing in a different look.
I think the trade breaks down into multiple parts here:
- 1st rounder and prospect (Sykora) to take Goodrow's contract.
- Henrique retained for the other 1st rounder
- Vatrano retained for Schneider, 2nd, 3rd and Nash to even the money.
- NYR gets back a 3rd pair RHD.
I think NYR can stomach this, because they should be expected to be drafting late this year and next. Maybe the price for Vatrano isn't enough in a vacuum, but it looks better in totality.
Does Tampa need to do this? Do they have an appetite to do this? I always feel like Tampa is interested in cap space and might be looking to add a Duhaime. And with all the injuries on D, they get a guy who is serviceable and can resign for cheap as an RFA. It certainly doesn't move a needle for TB, but listening to what Friedman says, maybe it's not their year and they choose to do a little bit of selling.
Maybe I'm just personally obsessed with the ultra physical type of players, but i think that it would balance out the roster a little and is a verbeek type of player.
- I absolutely love Sam Carrick, one of my favorite players watching his growth through San Diego and was ecstatic when he was rewarded with the contract he is currently about to finish. Would love to see him return in the offseason, but in this scenario, he does not as Jeannot fills his spot as a PP fill in. Someone else will need to pick up his PK duties.
Jesus that rangers trade is a lot. Schneider is untouchable. Don't need or want Perreault or lindstrom.
I was trying to wrap my head around it. Obviously it becomes a lot less if you start removing things like Goodrow, but I guess what do they want do? We'll see. I highly doubt this is how it would go down, but was imagining the prices
I wasn't entirely sure. Now reflecting, I think you're right especially at his cap hit and for what he can do, play in all situations.
My thinking is that there tends to be trade deadline inflation, and contenders may overpay a tad for physicality if their team really lacks it. I’d definitely bank on a 5th, but wouldn’t be surprised at all if he fetches a 4th.
Rangers decline. Schneider has much more value than Frankie. You're talking about Frankie retained plus a good asset just to start the conversation for Schneider.
Rangers decline this. Schneider by far is the best asset in this trade. I agree with the cost for Henrique and probably Goodrow but your off on Schneider.

Goodrow will be bought out in the off-season and Schneider isn’t being traded

In all seriousness, When do you guys see Schneider being able to climb above Trouba or Fox? I get the love for him, but for where he's playing currently on the third pair, is there a conversation to be had that you can trade a third pairing D man (currently) to satisfy other needs for a team in a win now mode? There's no sarcasm here. Genuine curiosity.

Honestly n 2026-27. After this season, Rangers will sign Schneider to a 2 yr bridge deal which coincides with Trouba's contract expiring in the same two year period. At that time, Rangers re-sign Schneider and he is a #2 RHD. Rangers pretty much see Schneider as a baby Trouba.

Normally I would agree with trading a third pairing dman but Schneider is still young and cost controlled (and a righty) which I think makes Drury hang onto him as long as possible.

Thanks for helping me understand. I guess I'm viewing it through the lens of a ranger team that is in "win-now" mode and needing to try and get over a CAR or FLA.
In that case, if the younger Perreault was the trade piece vice Schneider, is that the way?
Supposedly Drury doesnt want to trade him or Othmann since Rangers have a lack of depth at RW. I honestly think Zac Jones, Matthew Robertston, Berard and Sykora are on the table for Drury. Not saying Verbeek would take them but I think a combination of picks and them are what Drury is offering.
the rangers cannot afford to trade any young d. we legit have none in the pipeline
I was unaware of the NYR pipeline and its depth. I am starting to see why Schneider is so highly valued.

Looks like we were both right! 5th that can upgrade to a 4th if they win it all.
