Add a 3rd round pick as well and we accept, MaxPac is worth more than just a 5th.

Regardless of whether or not it was the right move, they brought in Klingberg to run PP1 and take some of the pressure off Reilly to play in that role at the start of the year. Going into the playoffs, you get a RHD puck moving defenseman who is more than capable of running and distributing on a PP with Matthews, Nylander, Marner, etc. for slightly over league minimum while only giving up a 5th. The leafs don't have a lot of capital to trade out and certainly wouldn't do so without a player with multiple years left on a deal or an extension in place for an expiring contract (in either case they'd likely need to move a contract out to make the cap work). This gives them a cheap option to run a PP that could be the best of all teams in the postseason. Plus you could pair him with McCabe on the 3rd Dpair to shelter him at even strength with Benoit as the extra D.

I could see maybe a 4th going back to WSH for Pac.

and DeAngelo sucks and fixes nothing, just like Klingberg who sucks and fixes nothing. They need to bring in good defenders and not ones who suck. Especially not ones who are notes pieces of feces with a history of locker room and off ice issues

What other RHD is Toronto going to go get that fits in their cap structure and will come relatively cheap? If they move a 1st for Walker they also have to dump a salary which complicates things even if there's retention on Walker. When DeAngelo has played this year with Skjei on the 2nd pair he's been pretty good in that top-4 role, and he's been very professional about being scratched for 2/3 of the year so I'd say the attitude issues should be behind him (he wasn't traded from CAR the first time due to attitude, that was purely due to financials). The main reason he isn't playing in the Canes lineup is due to him and Orlov having poor chemistry together and Chatfield playing really solid as the 6D, Tony may be a lot of things but he's not a bad player. If he was traded to TO he'd play PP1 and third pair minutes with either McCabe or Benoit as a D-partner to help shelter him at even strength.
