PIT would simply rather have a pick and cap space over a pick and a soon to be 30 year old, defensive, 3rd line winger that will be making $4.75 million for two more years after this one.

I have seen this a lot. I actually like Mikheyev but he is a big risk and has negative value. Smith is worth a 2nd at the TDL, and Mikheyev probably needs a 3rd to move. So if you included a 2nd, the Pens would consider it.

I know Mikheyev has been snake bit the last little while but why are we taking on the bigger contract and adding Mikheyev is better defensively which is what we need vs Smith let him go back to Vegas. Rather throw a pick at Washington for Patches then dothe Mikheyev deal. IMO put Mikheyev back on the 3rd line with Lindholm and Garland (Mikheyev was getting close to scoring and has done the best in replacement for Joshua) and when Joshua is back put him with Petey to make room for him. What we need imo is some size that can play (a guy like Max Jones from Anaheim) and a better RHD so we can split the top pair as Hughes and Hronek will get bullied in the playoffs.
