In 2019-20…Taylor Hall was in his final year and Devils started shopping him early in season. By December, there were two known bidders, Arizona and Colorado, and one “mystery team” in the mix for Hall. Devils fans were expecting the moon (Byram+ from COL, Soderstrom+ from ARI).

We found out after the deal was completed with Arizona that the third team involved was Calgary (LeBrun tweet 12/17/19). And later in season, Marek and Friedman told us what the package actually contained.

The Flames had offered a 2-for-2 ‘hockey’ trade to the Devils that Ray Shero (our GM at time) though long and hard about.

Taylor Hall played 35 games for Arizona, won one qualifying round and lost in five to Colorado. He signed in Buffalo in the off-season.

Sami Vatanen was traded to Carolina for Fredrik Claesson, Janne Kuokkanen and 2020 3rd round pick, that we used to select Nico Daws. Vatanen only play 7 games with Canes (and resigned in NJD the following season).

Sam Bennett was traded from Calgary to Florida in 2021 for Emil Heineman and 2022 2nd round pick. Heineman was eventually sent to Montreal in the trade for Toffoli and the pick was sent to Seattle in trade for Calle Jarnkrok.

So on Earth-2, Devils are selling Hanifin today, Mercer and Bahl are in Arizona, Siegenthaler is in Washington, Daws in Carolina, Toffoli is still in Montreal and Yegor is a Devil (reflected in lineup below).
