Hawks don't make that Edmonton trade. They don't need Broberg - even if they trade Phillips away. Rangers don't make that other trade.

Well, the Rangers aren't giving up a 2nd to the Hawks along w/ Kakko to get Reichel and Johnson, so there's that. Even if you rate Reichel as equal to Kakko (he's not by the way), Johnson half retained doesn't get a 2nd. Maybe a 3rd at best. And if there is one thing the Hawks AREN'T trading a 2nd round pick for, it's another LD. If Broberg was a RD, then ok. But he's not. And Broberg isn't better than Vlasic or Korchinski. And likely not better than DelMastro, so he wouldn't be needed beyond next season.

To play devils advocate, I will argue against you here. Broberg is probably better than Korchinski RIGHT NOW. But more than likely won't be in the long run. Either way, Del Mastro probably plays another year in the AHL. He could be a nice option to flip if he has success in the larger role that he would get on a team like CHI. I'm still not paying a 2nd for him, though, even without Phillips included. Maybe Phillips + a 3rd.

Yes. They shouldn't use 40 picks in 2 years. But there are MUCH better ways to use those picks, than overpaying for a borderline failure of a prospect. Especially one that plays a position CHI has in abundance.
