Description
Inferring a lot here but stay with me:

Why was Hanafin connected to Tampa as per these toronto based insiders. And why was it so specific? They don't randomly go hey Tanev wants to go to Toronto at some point before he retires. Or Adam Henrique really wants to go to new york. We know that these insiders get information from agents to help drive the market for these players and have leverage over gms. When Tampa was going on their runs they were never heavily connected to marquee players since JBB was unpredictable, Hanafin is arguably the most valuable player on the market, tampa is fighting for a wild card spot and have no assets so its not a logical fit from a fans perspective where teams would need to outbid each other to get a player like that. I think there is mutual interest between Pat Brisson and JBB, and now Pat is getting these insiders to leak this information so teams have an understanding that you'd be trading for 1 year of this player and won't be signing him longterm. Now its tampa trading assets for essentially a sign and trade while other teams will be offering packages for a rental. This benefits Pat Brisson and Hanafin because he'd get the full 8 years on a contract. Again JBB is unpredictable and I'd guess that he's laying out the framework for this team to move on from Stamkos and Hedman, they're both getting older, he doesn't want to give out legacy contracts and make the same mistake Chicago made. I believe JBB's looking at Sergachev and Hanafin running things from the backend. It'll be a year of Hedman Sergachev and Hanafin but Sergachev can slide to the right side and just imagine Hedman- Sergachev and Hanafin-Sergachev shifts from time to time.
I have no idea what the deal will be it might be more or less but this is a longterm fix than a 1 year rental type beat.

Idk what you mean by toronto insiders. Seravalli was the one who said that hanifin would prefer to go to tampa and he isnt very credible and then Chris Johnston said that tampa might be looking at Hanifin but there are also like 6 other teams looking at Hanifin. If JBB was looking to move on from stamkos dont you think he would have at least tried to trade him? I also dont know what hedman has to do with Hanifin, they would have enough cap for both of them especially if stamkos goes. Tampa has also been in and out of trade rumours throughout the years I wouldnt say this is the first time. Not everything needs to be a conspiracy theory tears of joy

I mean Seravalli also leaked the entire seattle expansion team. Its definitely a conspiracy theory i made up but its just weird with this team playing the way that it is, having the assets that they have and these guys going watch out for tampa and Hanafin. They were surface level connected to guys in previous years from a logical like JBB will definitely be looking to add on defense maybe this guy, and JBB is known to be aggressive and the team was going on runs. We're 1 year removed from a 1st round exit, we're in a wild card spot, the whole stamkos contract situation, again inferring that maybe this was in the plans over the summer. I don't think he would ever trade stamkos cause the fan base would go on a riot and the lockerroom would be pissed but if he walks from a lowball contract similar to Killorn I think it would be more digestible

If the above takes place I don't think they can afford him unless he takes a heavy discount. But the teams played with a stacked LHD before.

I would be fine with
2026 1st (it can be lottery protected)
Jack Thompson
Dylan Duke
And a later round pick for Hanifin @ half retained

Seravalli used to be a credible insider back then though and now he doesnt have as many sources. Its possible that its true but I dont regard his leaks as I would a EF, Weekes or CJ. I think people will be less pissed if he gets traded vs getting a lowball offer and walking. I guess it depends on how high the lowball offer is but him exiting the organization would make a lot of people mad regardless.

How about an offer like:
'26 1st
One of Thompson/Duke
One of Perbix/Lilleberg
'25 2nd
Mid round pick/lesser prospect if needed
Tampa wouldn't need the retention because of Sergachev's ltir.

That would work too.

I think Calgary would be happy to get Perbix.
