Description
Posting various trades with Maatta looking at what the return could be, Maatta could be retained 50% for a $1.5mil cap hit next year. Goal is to upgrade the defense with someone coming back with term. Also trying to make a prospect package that doesn't have to include the '24 1st. Hanafin would cost a 1st plus. I think Ferraro and Pettersson probably cost a 1st each but thinking a 2nd plus 2 prospects and a replacement NHLer could be accepted.

PIT: they save $1mil next year in the deal, get a pick, and a capable 6D
SJS: they would probably ask a 1st in return so maybe DET would have to add another prospect in the trade
SEA: move out a free agent they just signed getting a pick and prospect and a capable 6D in their lineup
CLB: probably the least likely to make this trade and only works if they want to move on from Provorov after acquiring him a year ago and value a pick and cap space next year more than the player, I don't think they need another 6D tho.

I got news for ya. None of those solutions are upgrades. It’s not like Maatta is playing 25 minutes a night.

        Easy no for pittsburgh.

Pettersson is one of the better defensive defenseman in the league, and has a good AAV.

They're going to retool in the summer and keeping him his crucial.

I mean if Maatta was playing a top 4 role, sure. He’s playing 16 minutes a night.

Pettersson would be an upgrade over Your 2LD (whether that be Chiarot or Walman)

        There ya go fixed it.

Maybe Ben and that’s even questionable. Walman is extremely affordable on pace for 15 goals. I’ll take him all day. Now Chairot sure. Upgrade

I think Johansson or Edvinsson are both future NHLers but I do agree with their plan to keep those guys in GR this year so they play 20 min a night and can play AHL playoff hockey hopefully, then next year, one of those guys moves up to the NHL and Holl or Maatta are prob the 7th D

Pittsburgh isn't doing that, theres nothing in that for them, Pettersson is worth a 1st+.

I don't see anything there that would interest San Jose.

Dumolin is cooked, he's a downgrade from Maata, that trade would be a win for Seattle.

Would assume Columbus moves Provorov at the TDL for a pick or two, maybe that'd interest them Idk, they do have some young LHD in their pipeline.

These prospects you're proposing to add have little to no value so the only thing you're really offering is the 2nd and whatever they can flip Maata for which is probably a 3rd.

Are they re-signing Gostisbehere? If not they should probably just keep Maata, would think Maata would have some value, like a 3rd or 4th round pick.

I'd consider that for Columbus, but I don't know that it helps significantly. Provorov is likely the Mateychuk placeholder, so it makes sense to keep him until Mateychuk proves he's NHL ready. If he is, then a Provorov flip for another LD that can play 2nd or 3rd pair for a stretch makes some sense, especially if he plays a different role. I just don't know that we'll know until after preseason next year.

We'd also likely flip Maatta at TDL 2025, in which case it makes more sense to keep Provorov (who we may be able to flip for a 1st) than swapping him for Maatta (which would be a middle-man trade for like a 2nd and 3rd in total?). Adding an extra step for the same function for a lower overall return doesn't make a ton of sense.

I don't mind this, I just don't think it accomplishes our goals well enough to pull the trigger.

What do the Jackets want most in return? young guys who can play in the NHL like Berggren or Veleno, late 20's vet NHLers under contract, or draft picks??

The biggest thing is quality. We've got so many NHL young guys (Johnson, Fantilli, Voronkov, Sillinger, Chinakhov, Marchenko, Texier, Boqvist, Jiricek), picks (we're only missing this year's 7th and likely next year's 2nd, plus we have a top-10 pick this year), and we have a smattering of late-20's/early-30's vets (Boone, Gaudreau, Severson, Gudbranson, Kuraly, and Danforth). It just hasn't come together for some reason.

I think the most likely trade scenario is packaging a few guys for an upgrade/pick and just let the young guys develop. Otherwise, hockey trades (like a Johnson for Zegras swap, or Laine for another winger/center of similar age). If we're truly selling a piece like Provorov, we'd just want the highest-value pick coming back we can get. We don't have much to sell and are already the 2nd-youngest team in the league, so I don't think Columbus will be very active until the offseason after we've hired a new GM.
