While I agree this trade doesn’t do it. Perrault and Othman are way more valuable to New York than Guentzel for 30 something games.

Maybe Othman but no way Perrault is moved. He’s the leading scorer in the NCAA

Guentzel is worth a 1st and top prospect. For a division rival, that makes it more expensive. Maybe the Pens throw a 2nd or 3rd back but it would take a lot to move Guentzel to a division rival.

If NY doesn't want to pay that, I totally get it. But, that would be the cost.

Guentzel is a top 5 winger in the NHL. That isn't cheap.

Guentzel is not worth a 1st and a top prospect, especially as a rental. A 1st and a decent prospect? Sure. But no one is going to trade a top prospect for a rental unless it’s a very elite tier player with an extension attached
