Lets see, one has been a great to elite shut down defender for like a decade and one had a good 25 game run and can barely make the roster of one of the worst teams in the league while getting almost 3 million bucks a year.
Hard choice sure

Big if true!

Peeke hasn't performed like he did last year, but he does block nearly as many shots as Lyubushkin and has a better shot with more upside. With a better coach, he could be a good 3RD, but the contract is a little rich for what he provides.

imo he can do more than 3rd pair, he can be the partner rielly needs. and could be there with him for years to come, but still. i want to see, how people feel about giving a first for an older dmen when a younger player with similar stats can be ours for free

Id go one for one with timmins MAYBE. But with timmins and lilegren already crowding the 6th defenceman spot I dont see how you could justify bringing in peeke at that cap hit

leafs wont be shopping for a 3rd pair dmen, as of right now, lily looks awesome with brodie and mccabe found his less mobile twin in benoit. rielly is the one getting a new friend if tree makes a trade.

Yeah so that’s a big risk putting your top pair minutes in the hands of a huge wildcard like Peeke. No thanks, not for me

Considering he's getting mauled in 7th d sheltered ice time that's a real good bet

Leafs have done something similar so many times.
Hainsey
Lyubu
Schenn,
Peeke may not be better than some of those names but he also isn’t worse.

Also if it doesn’t work they can also break the lines up. At the end of the day we get a physical shutdown dmen the fans will love for nothing, versus an aging dmen that is going to cost a lot. In my mind the choice is very very easy, I rather take the cheap gamble

Of course you would, you've convinced yourself a guy who has never been as good as tanev is right now is somehow a shutdown defender despite being horrible as a 7th d in sheltered minute's on a bad team and that his awful contract is meaningless.
Life is easy when you dont think past "i like this guy so he must be great"

He did have his best season playing first-pair minutes with a similar player in Werenski. I hope Toronto is willing to take the chance, I'm not a Peeke fan. But I also apologize in advance for hoping he isn't much more than a 3rd pair guy for Toronto, too...especially if you get him for free.
