Flyers should focus on making the playoffs instead of on making trades

Description
We all thought the Flyers would be sellers.

Guys like Konecny, Laughton, Frost, Walker and Ristolainen have all been subject to trade rumors.

But the playoffs are within reach.

IMO, the Flyers should be focused on making the playoffs and winning the Cup instead of making trades.

They should stand pat at the trade deadline.

I understand Sean Walker is a pending UFA.

But if you lose him in the offseason after making the playoffs this year, so be it.

Guys like Seeler, Laughton, Walker, Atkinson should be on the block. Briere stated it before the season they want to build a team that's seen as a contender for the Cup every year, not just a team that makes the playoffs year in and year out. He's got a vision for this team and he should stick to it. This season was about letting the young guys play to see what we have. They've played well, theres no doubt about that.

If you're moving Seeler, Laughton, Walker or Atkinson, it should be for better players with term.

It doesn't make sense to trade key players for futures when the playoffs are within reach.

Honestly I gotta disagree. They are nowhere near cupcontenders and would be lucky to get to the second round. It's wiser to just sell guys like Seeler, Walker and Laughton. They would still have good chances of making the playoffs because rest of the metro is playing so badly.

As long as selling them doesn't cost you a spot in the playoffs, then sure.

Even if they would end up missing the playoffs it wouldn't matter.

They are still in a rebuild and getting a bit higher pick won't hurt them.

This completely.....the Flyers for years have needed a true rebuild. This front office promised that when they took over that they would actually rebuild. Just because this team is overachieving doesn't mean they should change course. Now this situation does change things a little, it means Philly can stand pat and hold out for the price they want.

wholeheartedly disagree. they're in a position to potentially get 2 more 1sts at the deadline, as a young team with no intention of making the playoffs this year, there is no reason to not get those assets for pending ufas just to then play 5 games in the first round

from what we know, briere is not making a trade just to sell off assets. if he isn't offered what he wants he will hold on to everyone

I tend to agree with you. It may be more important to to give the young players a chance at playoff run in March and April, and maybe even be in the playoffs, instead of acquiring a some late 2nd and 3rd round picks for those expiring UFAs

1. If you have no intention of making the playoffs, then the Flyers should try losing games instead of winning them.

That's what tanking is all about ...

2. You only have one pending UFA that might get a 1st and that's Sean Walker.

3. If you have no intention of making the playoffs and you're not selling off assets to the highest bidder, then what are you even doing ??

As long as the playoffs are well within reach, the Flyers should hold on to everyone.

No GM, not even Briere, is going to be offered what he wants by another team unless it makes sense for that other team.

This is the first time I came across a fanbase that doesn't want to make the playoffs when they are likely to make the playoffs.

Unbelievable ...

Whatever happened to the idea of building a winning culture ?

If the Flyers start to fall in the standings their chances of advancing in the playoffs gets smaller.

I don't think all those players are going to get moved.....should they be taking calls on them - absolutely. Walker should be moved - will probably cost too much to keep. Seeler would be valuable to a Cup contender + I can't see him as a piece of the long term future.

Picks and prospects can be flipped for better players when this team is ready to take off. Too many years where this team qualifies for the playoffs only to pick in the 20s....Briere braced this fan base for a real rebuild - this year has been a good surprise.

And tbh who thought before this season started the Flyers would be where they are? They were projected to be top 5-7 pick this year....

1. if they wanted to tank, konecny/farabee/laughton/sanheim/hart would have been traded in the offseason. briere said that he thought this team wasn't bottom 5-10 and could at least be competitive in march. whole point of this year was to see what they had, which is a fringe playoff team in a year where the metro plays to expectations. tanking was never in the question and playoffs weren't an expectation

2. they have 3 pending ufas that have interest: walker/seeler/staal. could get 1st/2nd/6th. not ufas but laughton/ristolainen would fetch 1sts/young assets if moved

it's not that we don't want the team to make playoffs - it would be good experience for younger players 100% despite only playing 5-7 games in round 1

it's that not moving players that are not going to be here in 2-3 years makes no sense, which directly goes against what has been said time and time again since september

the 'winning culture' has already been embraced. got rid of many locker room problems (hayes/provorov/deangelo) and the team has made it known that it is 50x better without them

This season has been a pleasant surprise and making the playoffs would be great. But chances are we are going to get Carolina, and I doubt we have a chance in that series. We also have a lot of players that are playing so hard rn and burnout is coming. Not trading off UFAs like Seeler, Walker and Staal wouldn't make sense and if a great offer comes along for Laughton he should be moved too. Honestly we have replacements for all of those players already so we still could make the playoffs.

Nice to see fans with patience for a re-build. Making the playoffs isn't a must, building a contender is.
