Description
Before you tear me to shreds for a lowball offer, I ask you to watch some Ryan McLeod footage. The guy has so much raw talent, but desperately needs more opportunities with a team that'll have more use for him.

Pittsburgh also got Dupuis in that trade, who was the 2nd best player in the trade at the time.

Yes, but Dupuis was largely a depth throw in. He ended up being great value, but that wasn't accounted for in the deal at all. Dupuis was considered a decent depth winger at best.

Player A:
25yo, former 1st round pick with:
37 goals and 98 points in 181 games
That goal (0.82) and points (2.17) per 60 would rank 171st and 138th if compared to this season

Player B:
24yo former 3rd round pick with:
33 goals and 66 points in 143 games
That goal (0.92) and point (1.85) per 60 would rank 141st and 189th if compared to this season

Player C:
28yo former undrafted FA with:
81 goals and 162 points in 419 games
That goal (0.77) and point (1.55) per 60 would rank 188th and 228th if compared to this season

All 3 players make around 1MM

Player C (Dupuis) was better in hindsight but at the time he was the worst player in the deal (A is Armstrong, B is Christensen)

My point was that you can't look at the returns for Hossa + Dupuis and say it's equivalent to the return here. There's more value in this return.

I'd also argue that 29 year old Hossa was more valuable than 29 year old Guentzel.

I can show you the stats but I can't find them at the moment. Suffice to say, Guentzel has better numbers and drives possession more. Now, Crosby is better than any player Atlanta had at the time, so its hard to deconflate that. But, I can say that Guentzel appears to be the better player and likely is compared to Hossa.

Correct. I remember that trade well. Dupuis was never considered a player with more potential than depth at best. That is also an example of why getting throw in value in trades is so important. Dumoulin was another example of a player that overachieved their expected value at acquisition.
