Description
Avs solve biggest need in a badly needed 2C.

Isles giving up Nelson is tough, but they're in a weird spot with an aging roster and a barren prospect pool. Trade gives them a bit of a reset without totally gutting the NHL roster.

- Behrens is a high upside D prospect.

- Meyers can immediately be plugged into NHL roster. Would wager he looks much better in New York.

- Johansen is in trade for cap reasons, but has a better chance of returning to form with New York's style of play rather than Colorado's emphasis on skating.

Could swap Meyers out for Olausson, but I doubt he's viewed as highly. Malinski could also be in the mix, but would imagine the Isles would want a younger forward in return rather than 2 defensemen.

Not when you’re taking back Ryan Johansen’s contract for 2 years

It’s one year, the remainder of this season won’t matter if they sell, but yes he is negative value.

how is a 28 yr old winger who scored 39 goals last year and this year fell out of favor with Tocchet this year. Under Bruce Boudreau he was incredible

Because he was playing fourth line minutes and I'm just telling you what I remember hearing

He was demoted to the 4th line by Tocchet. Again under Boudreau, he scored 39 goals. He doesn't go from that to a cap dump in last than a year.

Think you’re underselling Meyers a bit here. He’s been much better in the NHL than his production would suggest, suffering mostly from low shooting percentages and real unlucky bounces. Has had chances. I think he specifically makes a ton of sense for the Isles if they sell. Could easily be a young replacement for Martin or Clutterbuck.

When I'm talking about a package for my 2C who's been a top scorer and a good 2 way player for us for years. I don't want 4th line prospects who can replace Clutter or Martin. I need better value.

I mean they we're paying the Flames to take Kuzmenko off their hands... I think that qualifies as a cap dump

He was very widely reported (Friedman etc.) to be considered a cap dump.

again, where is any media article or coverage stated that Vancouver paid more to get rid of Kuzmenko? From what I read, other teams were interested in him. If he was considered a negative value, I'm sure more teams would have taken him from Vancouver.

Friedman, really? that's the source. lol Ok.

I would love to have my isles take a "in prime" winger who just scored 39 goals and get him for free from Vancouver

Sure which is why he’s not a main piece, but lets be honest those kind of guys are total catnip for Lou.

I would have to hope that even at the old fart's age, he still would recognize that the value here isn't there for Nelson.

Most of the arguments are pretty much moot points anyway. The Avs can't really afford Nelson next year.

That I agree with. Thought we were taking Johansen too. But I’d just prefer a 1st and higher end prospect

Still don’t think Nelson is traded at all though

It would probably be smart to trade Nelson now and get a a larger return than a as a rental next year but it would go against everything Lou has done in the past years

Depends on Landeskog’s status. If he’s done, you’d have to do a bit of surgery in the summer, but it’s very doable.

Yeah this is the main kicker to me. Isles gonna be in a real bad spot 3-4 years from now though if they continue with this.

While I agree with you, it's a moot point. But not for the financial reason you state. But I don't think the isles will move Nelson, all be it a dump move by not.

You can't say that it's not "Realistic" that Landeskog's career is over. He's been out for what 2 years now. I think the injury will force him to retire IMO unfortunately.

Avs are going to have a big problem vis a vis the cap next season

it really only becomes an issue if landy comes back. outside of that kovalenko basically slots in for drouin and you've got pretty much the same top 9 including nelson.

The problem is that the Avs can't (and likewise fans shouldn't) make that assumption. Therefore they have to factor that in so it's very much a case of what is realism and what is fantasy. However I do agree that the Isles likely won't move, nor want to move, Nelson.

As I said, realism vs fantasy. Sure you can make it work. Anything is mathematically possible on here. In reality the Avs have to consider Gabe is going to be back until or unless they know otherwise and therefore plan accordingly. Whether that means moving other pieces out to accommodate a move like this and taking the hit if he doesn't make it back, or saying 'nope, can't afford that'.

They can't make a move and assume Landy isn't going to ever come back; that is just unrealistic. My guess is that he gives it a go next season so he knows for sure if he can handle game action. It's possible he makes the decision this summer but it isn't a foregone conclusion.

I mean they move Girard and would have 5 million to get bottom of the lineup players and have more futures added for Girard if landy is back and if he’s not you don’t need to move anybody

....and also have to replace Girard. I mean we all know the maths can be made to work. I've done it myself plenty of times. Personally I think Manson & Byram (Byram is bringing in the highest return out of the three 'moveable D', and Manson probably has to be moved) are likely to get moved before Girard, and in all honesty the covid flat cap knackered the Avs plans. The likelihood is at least two paid guys have to be moved next year for the Avs to not stagnate further which is to my mind what has happened. Whether both on D or a D & F is another question. Doing it for Nelson? Certainly wouldn't be my choice.

Toews-Makar Byram-Manson is still an elite d-core Girard just makes it absolutely insane. Idk where you’re getting we have to move 2 guys to add Nelson we have 6 mil to fill 2 4th liners 2 bottom pair d a backup goalie not difficult for them to fill out and still have money left over for the scratches
