Avs 2C

Description
Avs solve biggest need in a badly needed 2C.

Isles giving up Nelson is tough, but they're in a weird spot with an aging roster and a barren prospect pool. Trade gives them a bit of a reset without totally gutting the NHL roster.

- Behrens is a high upside D prospect.

- Meyers can immediately be plugged into NHL roster. Would wager he looks much better in New York.

- Johansen is in trade for cap reasons, but has a better chance of returning to form with New York's style of play rather than Colorado's emphasis on skating.

Could swap Meyers out for Olausson, but I doubt he's viewed as highly. Malinski could also be in the mix, but would imagine the Isles would want a younger forward in return rather than 2 defensemen.

Don’t see Lou selling personally but Nelson would certainly net quite the haul for them

I believe Nelson gets a better package. Johansen is a negative value, Behrens is an undersized D-man (no interest in him), Meyers is a 25 yr old AHL player, The picks are fine.

Just need a better package of players

I’d agree with you there. I think a 1st 2nd and a prospect probably a little better than behrens just for Nelson and another pick to take on RyJo. I think islanders would want a forward rather than D as well

A first, second, and a prospect isn't a bad deal for a 2C

Nelson is better than Elias Lindholm and has another year of term

Think you’re underselling Meyers a bit here. He’s been much better in the NHL than his production would suggest, suffering mostly from low shooting percentages and real unlucky bounces. Has had chances. I think he specifically makes a ton of sense for the Isles if they sell. Could easily be a young replacement for Martin or Clutterbuck.

I think that the Horvat package is a lot easier of a comparison than Lindholm considering the Isles were involved in the Horvat trade and there isn't a cap dump included... A first, a second, a prospect, and maybe a midround pick isn't a bad deal for either side

I disagree. Every year the FA market is set by a trade. Last year, it was the Horvat trade. This year, the market for a 2C is Lindholm's trade. Also remember Lindholm is a UFA at the end of the year. Nelson has 1 more remaining year at a reasonable 6M for a 2C who scores 30 goals.

Beauvillier ended up being a flop but at least he was a younger forward with a track record of 18-20 goal seasons under his belt. I wouldn’t classify him as a cap dump. I also think Raty is a better prospect than anyone coming back to NYI in this hypothetical deal

For example, if Boston wanted Nelson (no brainer for them IMO) that package starts with a 1st and Lysell. Maybe the Isles take back an expiring contract like Forbort to make the cap work, but I’d prefer that trade over this one

I mean the inclusion of a cap dump makes the value a little murkier... The Sean Monahan trade could also be used as a baseline

Ehhh… not sure about that. Remember the Canucks also had to pay extra to get him from Calgary.

I agree that a prospect better than Raty would be coming back but I think the combination of a better prospect plus the extra 2nd and an extra mid-round pick more than makes up for the difference between the two

What VAN paid still sets the market, and again Nelson has another full season of term at a very reasonable cap hit. He 100% returns a better package than Lindholm IMO

No... just as a base trade... Nelson for a 1st, 2nd, decent prospect, and maybe an extra mid-round pick seems more than fair... paying you to take on Johansen’s contract would probably require a second or more

Show me where the Canucks had to pay more? You don't think at the deadline, there are a bunch of teams looking for a solid 2 way 2 line center who scores 30 goals. If that's the case, Isles will have plenty of suitors calling.

I think he's talking about the division tax when he means that he has to pay more

That I agree with. Thought we were taking Johansen too. But I’d just prefer a 1st and higher end prospect

Still don’t think Nelson is traded at all though

how is a 28 yr old winger who scored 39 goals last year and this year fell out of favor with Tocchet this year. Under Bruce Boudreau he was incredible a cap dump

You would only take ryjo for one year and then post deadline if he went.
