Turn the 3rd into a 1rst and 4th, and it's a deal.

Nope, that's not getting Hanifin. No interest in Chiarot and not much interest in Berggren.

I wish Detroit fans would realize we don't need another LHD especially at the price it's going to take to get him.

This is one of the stupidest trades I’ve seen yet for Hanifin

-just be cause we have 50 of them doesn’t mean that we don’t need quality. As for calgary peps, no one else has the assests and funds to pull him over. Maybe we go a second, berg, char and another prospect that isn’t Edy or Walls. Calgary may get a 1st and 2nd, but not two nhl ready guys and you have massive defensive contract issues. Especially now that Calgary just came out and said they wont sign hani to a long term deal.

Ok, but that's just poor asset management, you need to look at the LHDs Detroit has. Edvinsson is going to be a top paring dman. Then we have Walman who is probably a 2nd or 3rd pair dman but when paired with Seider he looks at home on the 1st line. A lot like Towes but then he was paired with Makar and now if they decide to move him they will get a 1st pair return for him. Then we have Johansson, Wallinder and Cleveland. Plus we still have Chariot for 2 more seasons and Matta for another season. Now I can see Maatta being traded but Chariot is a different story. He is playing better than last season but he is 32 and his play just isn't worth $4.75M and even if someone wanted him would Yzerman trade him, he really likes Chariot. So trading for Hanifin could not only end up being redundant it would take away playing time from Edvinsson and other prospects. I'd much rather use assets and cap space to get an RHD like Roy. On the right side we currently have Seider, Petry and Holl and if one of them were to get hurt or had miss games then they dlid Chariot or Ghost to their off-side. That's because we don't have another RHD that is NHL ready.

Calgary did announce Hanifin has to go. Why did they do that? It could be because he isn't willing to sign long term because he either wants to test free agency or has a specific team he wants to sign with. If that is the case than their best bet for a big return will be teams that don’t mind renting Hanifin.

I don't know if you noticed that Detroit has been dropping down the list of favorites to land Hanifin. That could be for the same reason his unwillingness to sign a long term deal.

There is also a very good chance that Yzerman chooses not to make any big additions at the TDL and just moves the up coming UFAs.

I don’t disagree that Detroit has dropped down, nor do I disagree with the prospects of Walls and Edvisson, but even if both come up Yzerman is not sitting there scared about rolling two lefties on the same line. Johansson is at least two years out, consistently. That’s going to be the end (or a year out) of Chariot, Ghost, Petry, and Matta. That is plenty of space for Hanifin to go long term (again, if they can get a long term) and the youngsters coming up.
Again, I 100% agree it is if and only if we can get a long term worked out with Hani, which is seeming less likely. But rolling Edi and Hani on the second with Walls and Maata on the third??? I’m not sad about that.

Detroit needs to find a 25-27 year old D-man L or R, because the 30+ and under 24 is too much of a gap.

“AE” I don’t think we are in much disagreement, just the small details of things if I read what you commented correctly.

My only thing is I don’t see many UFA’s in that 25-29 range.
