The Rangers need someone with speed who can help Zibanejad score at 5v5. Toffoli is not fast at all and is hardly outproducing Wheeler at 5v5.

Wheeler has 7 secondary assists, not 3, and Toffoli only has one more goal than Kreider (who plays with Zibanejad, not Panarin) at 5v5 and wouldn’t replace him front of the net during the cycle on the same line.

You can move goalposts about 5v5 counts vs primary points if you want, it doesn’t change the fact that Toffoli isn’t the answer just like Wheeler isn’t. You’ve been wanting the Devils to trade him for months now, I have a hard time believing his value is anywhere near a 1st and a 2nd to the Rangers.

Honestly, if NJD are interested in Allen, he could be had for cheap IMO. I don't think the sticking point is value for the Habs, its not retaining. I think they're not entertaining any trade where they retain, solely cause they need the retention spots for other players. And obviously as others have mentioned, Habs aren't moving Monty. He's the guy going forward in MTL now.

Pick which 4 D get sent down if you want to keep 3 goalies. And you aren't coming from a position of leverage if you try and sell these guys in the offseason to get out of a roster crunch.

NJD would pass on an unretained Allen at probably any price. Acquiring him unretained means we likely eat rookie bonuses next year. Adding allen for this year is not worth adding 6 million dollars to next years salary cap.
