If you want to trade for a Calgary defenseman, go after Chris Tanev and then give him a contract extension.

LAST THING we should be doing is signing a 34 year old defenseman

I can’t see CGY moving Andersson. He’s one of their talented players that are locked in at a great number. They have way more expendable players that they can move for picks and future assets. It seems as if they’re looking to retool and move on from guys that don’t want to be there, not completely tear it down.

If you wanna top 10 protect the pick, you might as well just call it a 2025 first. Next years first just doesn't have the same value, plus this year's first is probably 8th overall. I can see top 2 protecting the pick, a gm that gives up THAT pick should be fired on the spot, but 8th overall? Look at the Sabres picks in the 7-9 range recently- ristolainen, mittelstadt, Alex Nylander, cozens, savoie, quinn- some nice players, some not so much, if you think andersson is the answer, throw the pick on the table (I'd do top 2 protection though).

Until we AT LEAST start getting some rumors that Andersson is available, it seems really pointless to keep discussing him like it’s a real possibility

At least he would be better than Erik Johnson, and probably cost about the same. Even if you give him two years, he’s probably still better than Erik Johnson when the deal is over. I could think of worse stop gaps if we can’t get a younger player that will be part of the core going forward.

E.Johnson is gone after this year anyways,
so bringing him up is pointless

Our defense next year (without additions) looks something like:
Samuelsson//R.Johnson - Dahlin
Power - Clifton/Jokiharju
R.Johnson/Samuelsson - Clifton/Jokiharju

The Sabres thought process (IMO) is likely that they could live with that set up as those guys continue to develop

So I’d we are gonna make an addition,
it would likely be a significant one (again, IMO)
And a 34 year old who is well past his prime just isn’t very significant

Tanev would be unlikely to sign here anyways,
as he’s probably chasing a Cup at this point
