Hanifan is a top pairing defenseman on most teams in the league. I think Hampus Lindholm is a fair comparison, he went for a 1st and 2 2nds with no extension in place, so I stand by Holtz and a 1st get you Hanifan with an extension.
Hampus Lindholm
-signed his extension 1 day after the trade. There was an extension in place
-Came with a multi year cap dump of 5.5 million dollars in Trevor Moore who was an AHLer (that costs a 2nd)
So you’re right. Lindholm comp. 1st+2nd with extension.
Also “extension in place” isn’t a real meaningful thing on a UFA. Hanifin agreeing to sign with us, at UFA rates on years where you have no control over him does not increase his value in any real way.
It’s a thing cap friendly users do to try and pretend their rentals aren’t rentals
Additionally, when the Sharks asked for Holtz in the meier deal, they were told it would be 1 for 1 if they wanted him.
