Sharks decline. It's not really about the dollars, it's about the retention slot. Their final retention slot this year and next would be a tough sell for a 4th round pick, especially when they have a good number of players already they'd like to move who likely cost retention slots. Add in another 2 years of retention after Brent Burns is off the books and they definitely want more than that. The 1.17M is a very small part of it, but if they wanted to retain that extra amount they could've easily retained more on the Karlsson deal and gotten more than an extra 4th. In a recent STH event GMMG discussed the team starting to compete for a playoff spot in 2-3 years (read: like the Sens, Wings, and Sabres this year, not being a cup contender or even a lock for the playoffs), so they want cap off the books sooner rather than later. If a great deal comes up they probably wouldn't pass on it, but a 4th for 4 years isn't that deal, especially with 2 years of it being the final retention slot.
