Description

With the team they have now, they are probably the favorite to come out of the East again in 2024.

I tried to keep everyone, but one of Cousins or Stenlund had to be set free. OEL has played well enough that he may have priced himself out. Montour not getting term might be the other question mark. I know he has had slow start following injury, just unclear how much that has dinged his next deal. And my first inclination was to extend OEL (~Suter’s contract), let Montour walk, and trade Knight for Montour replacement. But Montour may be more affordable in July 2024 than we had expected in July 2023.

Questions…(1) could they keep the team intact if they moved Spencer Knight? (2) what is the ceiling return they could get for Knight? And would that come at deadline or in off-season?

I don’t think NJD should target a young, unproven goaltender — they need consistency and have the assets to get an elite goalie.

And will a team bite on Knight at that cap hit? Not sure. He has potential, but has slipped a lot and $4.5m is a big contract for a unproven goalie.

Elite goalies, under contract, are never traded. And Knight is a pretty good one with risks, but those risks and his cap hit are the only reasons he may become available.
