Description
Feel like a lot of fans continue to scrutinize Dubas's offseason, but fans have ignored how poor of a place Hextall (and JR) left this team/roster in.

There was no need for Hextall to Trade Matheson and Marino, they could've kept both and had a perfectly fine top 4 pairing with Letang and Pettersson.

Signing Carter to a new contract also hurt the cap space.

Dubas could've gone into the off-season with $13.5M to add 4 forwards... (the $1.5M retention on Petry would've never existed for anyone that asks where the $13.5M space came from).

Could even bump it to $18.5M space without trading for Smith.

$18.5M For a 2 and 3 LW plus 3C would've resulted in a much stronger team.

Fans seem to have a short memory that Hextall did sever damage to this team.\

**Updated**

I added Sprong, ROR and EROD as examples of what the penguins could've done. Again the Smith trade may have no happened had Dubas had the space he did and they could've traded elsewhere.

I think everyone understands how bad of a job those fools did. That doesn’t mean mistakes weren’t made this offseason.

The common denominator is also the coach. Dubas changed half the roster and yet the Pens have just about the identical record from last year to now. Really beyond time to make a move. 30th ranked power play, with that talent?

The team is top 10 in the league in most other areas, so I completely disagree, and the players have stated they don't want sullivan gone.

Fire Reirden 100%, but to put full blame on the coaching staff for the powerplay woes is just delusion at this point. Plenty of the blame goes on the players themselves too. Always making too many passes, bad turnovers, that's not coaching.

I don't disagree, but at the same time no GM is perfect, they all give out contracts that turn sour (Graves) or the smith trade.

I think both were smart at the time, and the correct thought process was there, but you can't predict players simply not working or in Smith's case looking uninterested.

Agree on Heinen (and Erod), this team could've easily had him in the bottom six, but they could've had much more in the bottom/mid six.

        It's unfortunate.

I think Graves will turn out fine when he figures out why we signed him in the first place and stops trying to be like Tanger and EK65. The Marino trade was beyond awful, the worst of all their trades.

oh there are a lot of trades that were bad, I personally really liked McCann and hated that he got the treatment he did in Pittsburgh.

This was more focused around the defense specifically.

Trading Matheson to MTL for Petry and John Marino to NJD result in Rutta being signed.

Then Dubas using Petry and Rutta (plus others) to move for Karlsson who makes more alone than Matheson and Marino combined. (nothing against EK).

Anyway you shake it a top four combined with Matheson/Letang/Pettersson/Marino would've been absolutely fine and provided much more cap for the middle six.
