The Rangers recently began deploying Brodzinski at 3c, and he’s looked very good there. He produces at a similar rate as Monahan at 5v5 and is also very good at faceoffs. He also has a good motor and speed which Monahan is missing. Either way, they wouldn’t trade Cuylle for a rental.

I am not a Rangers fan, so I have not watched a lot of their games to see Cuylle play, but why do the Rangers fans seem to be saying that Cuylle is untouchable? He was a second round pick, had good (but not amazing) numbers in juniors, was a 0.66 point per game player in the AHL and is on pace for less than 25 points this year. I understand he is young and that the Rangers probably think he will develop more, but on a win-now team, is this type of player not expendable if they think that a rental could help them win it all this year? (To be clear, I am not saying that Monahan is the only piece that they need, but he could be a start). It is not that unusual for win-now teams to make trades for rentals by giving up players with potential.

Maybe Rangers fans can fill me in on how good they think Cuylle is going to be (ahead of Kakko and Lafreniere?)
Thanks

Cuylle is not necessarily untouchable, but pretty much all the proposals for him involve trading him for a rental, which makes no sense for the Rangers. As for his production, he’s been stuck with Bonino who is legitimately awful. Cuylle is big, hits hard, plays well along the boards, and has a knack for scoring, which bodes well for the postseason. He’s also cost-controlled and probably won’t get a huge contract after next season, which is important for a cap team like the Rangers.

He is unlikely to surpass Laf or Kakko on the depth chart.

Cuylle only plays 11 minutes a night I don't understand why he's untouchable.

i read it and i dismissed it. I reckon this Monahan trade is a fair deal for a 4th liner who on pace for 23 pts this year and plays 11 minutes a night.

OK. It just seems to me that Cuylle is around where he should be for a 2nd round pick and I think that Montreal might be able to get a first round pick from a contending team for Monahan (but maybe he doesn't), so I thought that the Rangers would look at this proposal as a good trade for them. I think Rempe and Norlinder essentially cancel each other out, so it is really a second round pick and a fifth round pick for Monahan, which does not seem to be an overwhelming return for Monahan.

Perhaps this is one situation where New York says: "We don't want to give up on Cuylle because of the value he has to our team as a cost controlled player" and Montreal says "If that is your best offer (a second round pick and a fifth round pick) we will look to trade Monahan elsehwere". And this is fine for both sides to think that way.

Cuylee has everything the Rangers need more of, such as size, speed, talent and physicality. Plus he is young and affordable in a salary cap world. He isn't "untouchable" but the only way they trade him is if some GM wants to massively overpay for him.

Big part of the puzzle. You don't target, draft, develop a Wilson Lite, to promote and watch him gather most hits by a rookie just to trade him away! Especially for a rental package worth a 2nd & 6th. You don't know him but you want him paints a better picture than cute rookie stats...

Its the classic example of a fan that never watches the Rangers, knows nothing about the team, and then just looks at a stat sheet and makes assumptions. Pure ignorance.
