Leafs say forget it this year and set up for next year

Description
All these moves would be either at TDL but most likely off-season
This is just an option here to make these moves and set up to make a run next season. 15.5M left over with 4M increase next year and about 5M decrease in JT’s resign. We should have 25M approximately to go out and get a top 6 winger, 1 or 2 depth forwards, 2 solid RHD to replace Timmins and Lagesson and a back up goalie or resign Jones for 1.5M? Not ideal to throw this season away but they aren’t going anywhere anyways. Take a chance to reload the cupboards and open some cap space to get the players we need and not just what’s available for the peanuts we usually have left over.

Seems a little extreme, doesn't it Mealfinder?

Do you REALLY see Tree doing this? 🙄

Well if they lose in the first round again, what’s your solution? Extend Marner to 12.5M and keep riding this train? Just looking at different options

Leafs would look much different if I were GM.

Not saying it would be better. But definitely different.

You know what the definition of insanity is? 😬

minus the cap not working, i can't see Sweeney giving up a 1st, 2 2nds, and a 3rd for 2 years of Bert in the playoffs (combining the DET trade)

Makes sense but he did play well for them. Maybe if they worked out an extension ahead of time?

would depend a lot on term/expected AAV. He was a good player here, but we need top 6 help, we have plenty of 3rd line players so i think Sweeney should be cautious heading in to a year when most of our D-core is expiring and still in the need for a 1C

I genuinely can't think of a time when a contending team traded its 2nd best player and became better and won the cup. Has that ever actually happened?

Hey what do I know? Just keep doing what you're doing! It's working SO well!

You seeing the Leafs win a Cup...

Has that ever actually happened?

Yeah I know. The Sharks suck. I'm still allowed to have an opinion on here.

I’m not sure but as of lately, Van got rid of Horvat and picked up Hronek, Soucy and Zadorov. Went from a non playoff team to a contender and 1st place RN. Jets parted ways with PLD and look at them. It’s not about the player, it’s about what the team needs. They have lots of offence, they need D, F depth and potentially a back up G

Bold moves can always potentially help. The biggest problem with a Marner trade or a Nylander trade is two fold. If you trade Marner you are sacrificing 100 points out your lineup and the chemistry involved. So two things need considered. You need to find a replacement on offense. ( Doesn't need to be a 100 point guy but 65+ points atleast. Then you need to think of the other need. Defense.) Then you need to consider salary. The 65+ point is probably 6+ million per year. The top 4 D. 5+ million if it is someone we absolutely need. That's the salary of Marner right there. Then the other team needs to think that said player will actually make a difference. Essentially you need a Tkachuk deal. How often are those deals made. That is why Nylander wasn't traded and why Marner is probably not going to be traded.
We love to think it is so easy to make a cup team but everyone forgets it takes two teams to make a deal happen.
Not one.
