Take Chatfield out and the Canes probably consider. I'm a big fan of Orlov and I feel like he's finally starting to adjust to the canes system and play his game down this stretch. He's shown glimpses of what he can do and I can see why Bruins fans like him so much. But, he's playing the 3rd pair making almost 8 million dollars, and when you already have Skjei on the roster, that's just bad roster management.
I get what they're trying to do with Orlov kind of being the stop-gap between Skjei (who i think they would be quicker to move this season than Orlov) and Nikishin next year, but there's guys out there next year that can be that, and we need a goalie asap. I think this could work for both teams.
If I were Don Sweeney, I’d be kind of fearful of the consequences of trading a goaltender. Part of me believes the team is a middle of the road, fringe playoff team whose record is inflated because those two guys are so good.
There are people who believe the goalies are good because of the defense. I don’t see it that way. There are players who play 200 ft hockey on that team, but there are some weaknesses and more odd man rushes than I’d like
I can see the value of this swap if Carolina makes it close to net neutral, but I’d be surprised if Sweeney does it. Its a good discussion though
The irony is a there is a lot of concern is over a good 3rd line, journeymanish player in Chatfield. There are always players you love more than they should technically be worth. I assumed he was that player for the Hurricanes. In reality, players like him shouldn’t hold up a deal like this, but I can understand the hesitation there. Trent Frederic is developing into that player for me
