That's true enough. I just like the fit, as they had tremendous chemistry back in their earlier Calgary days together. Any deal for him this season would be premised on him signing an extension, but as you say, they can just wait and try and get him in the offseason. They do risk Monahan signing a cheap extension in Montreal, he allegedly loves it there, and would like to make it home. So if there was any time to convince him otherwise, it would be now, via trade!
What could happen with Monahan is:
1: he stay healthy and get extended with Montreal as he's loving it here
2: he get trade at deadline to an competitive team for a mix of value around 1 pick (1 round) + prospect and at summer resign with Montreal
3: he get trade at deadline to an competitive team for a mix of value around 1 pick (1 round) + prospect ad love where he's have been trade an resign with them ( that an risk to happening)
4: he will be injury between now and the deadline which will drop is value.
Personally I would prefer option #2 but you never know, if you trade him to maximize is value he could resign with other team. On a 3 years deal I would be comfortable to pay him 5 to 6 millions if he's staying healthy. With this kind of contract he will be in the range of Dach and Newhook contract duration.
