DAL will have the cap flexibility to make this trade only at the deadline.

Thoughts?

Monahan has too much value(this this point), so change that 5th to a 1st (top 15 protected) and then yes

No he doesn't. THis is a terrible take. He's a .5 PPG player, and will drop as he won't be top 6 in DAL. Plus MTL is getting the equivalent of a first in Bourque who would be an excellent fit in MTL.

Agreed, the Stars are running with Hintz, Johnston and Duchene as their top 3 centers. Plus, Monahan is a UFA-to-be.

I still think the best place for Monahan, if not still in Montreal, would be Columbus, to try and re-energize his good buddy Gaudreau.

Colombus is out of the playoffs and they would unlikely want a rental - that being said, i agree that they might try to sign him this summer

I agree. Bourque has a little more value than Monahan. Newhook was traded for a late first and a high 2nd. Bourque has a similar value - Monahan is worth a late first at the deadline, IMO.

I think he'd be a nice fit in DAL, their fourth line is weak, and Monahan would help on the PK. Plus ha can play on the wing. DAL would be a serious contender with him on their roster.

That's true enough. I just like the fit, as they had tremendous chemistry back in their earlier Calgary days together. Any deal for him this season would be premised on him signing an extension, but as you say, they can just wait and try and get him in the offseason. They do risk Monahan signing a cheap extension in Montreal, he allegedly loves it there, and would like to make it home. So if there was any time to convince him otherwise, it would be now, via trade!

What could happen with Monahan is:

1: he stay healthy and get extended with Montreal as he's loving it here

2: he get trade at deadline to an competitive team for a mix of value around 1 pick (1 round) + prospect and at summer resign with Montreal

3: he get trade at deadline to an competitive team for a mix of value around 1 pick (1 round) + prospect ad love where he's have been trade an resign with them ( that an risk to happening)

4: he will be injury between now and the deadline which will drop is value.

Personally I would prefer option #2 but you never know, if you trade him to maximize is value he could resign with other team. On a 3 years deal I would be comfortable to pay him 5 to 6 millions if he's staying healthy. With this kind of contract he will be in the range of Dach and Newhook contract duration.
