Trade Montembeault and Monahan ASAP and keep Allen

Description
In my opinion, if Montreal could trade Montembeault and Monahan right now, they should do it. They should keep Allen.
Montembeault seems to be playing better (quite a bit better??) than Allen lately, so the return in a trade for Montembeault should be higher, especially since he is cheaper.

Keeping Allen increases the chances of Montreal losing games (I firmly believe that another year of tanking and getting a high draft pick increases the chances of long term success).
Montembeault is replaceable. He has been good, but not great. It is not like they would be trading Patrick Roy or Carey Price. Fowler or Primeau (??) make up the long-term goaltending plans in Montreal.
Monahan started quite well with points production but has cooled down recently. I think it is best to trade him while his traditional stats still look good. If not, there is the injury risk or the risk that he turns into a 45 point player on the year rather than a 65 point player.
Personally, my biggest goal for Montreal this year is to add good assets for the rebuild (which is only a few years in) rather than landing in the “mushy middle “ and trying to sneak into the playoffs.
Montreal is not trading its core young talent (I just don’t think Montembeault qualifies as “core young talent”) so even if they lose the trades in the short-term, their improved draft position only helps them in the long term.

Ottawa? Why would the team with the fewest points in the division acquire Monahan?

Why would you want so little while trading for Campbell’s contract?

Ottawa likely isn’t trading a 1st rounder right now either

Monahan is in there as a Pinto replacement for Ottawa for this year so that they can still try to make the playoffs in. 2023-2024. I made the Ottawa Pick a 2025 pick because I am thinking that the Senators believe that in 2024-2025 Ottawa will hopefully be in the playoffs and their pick will be no worse than #17.

I guess. Habs really need players right away, not picks who may only be ready to play in the NHL 2027-28. None of us want to wait that long!

It is a fair question. My thought was that if Montreal wants to possibly get Edmonton’s pick this year and possibly have it be a pick as low as #8 the Habs will need to sweeten the pot for Edmonton by saying: “We will allow you to protect the pick to a certain point”.

If Edmonton would agree to make it Top 3 or Top 5 protected instead, then Montreal obviously goes with that.

I can wait. I would rather do the rebuild properly than rush it.
If, however, the Habs want to speed up the rebuild a little bit they could see where that 2025 Senators pick ends up falling and trade that pick and additional future assets for a more readily available young player, like they did in the Dach trade.

I wonder how you would feel if Dach was healthy this season. Every team looks bad when they lose their best center.

I still don’t think Dach vaults them into contender status, so I would still be OK with sticking with the rebuild

No thanks on Monahan

I would give up Kubalik and Lassi Thomson at most. Montreal can find a better offer for sure.

Ottawa? Why would the team with the fewest points in the division acquire Monahan?

Ottawa is 5th in GF/GP right now (and really close to 3rd) despite having missed Chabot and Greig at least half their games. They have 10 players over 0.75 PPG right now (which is 61.5 pts per 82 games) and Stutzle is on pace for 113 pts. Chabot is not even in that top-10, even though he is 17th in PPG among D-men since 2018-19

Stützle 1.38 PPG
Giroux 1.00 PPG
Tkachuk 0.94 PPG
Joseph 0.94 PPG
Tarasenko 0.81 PPG
Greig 0.78 PPG
Norris 0.77 PPG
Sanderson 0.75 PPG
Batherson 0.75 PPG
Chychrun 0.75 PPG

There's 8 forwards in there plus they have Kubalik and Pinto who round out a more than sufficient Top-10 forwards group. They don't need Monahan at all

And considering Monahan has the 2nd highest xGA/60 among NHL forwards and one of the lowest xGF%, they need him EVEN LESS. What Ottawa needs is a GM to be named who would then bring in a whole different coaching staff with a very different team defense concept as it's basically non-existent under DJ Smith.

Also, Ottawa played 5 less games than pretty much all teams (ridiculous schedule), they have a better P% and a positive differential

I know he is not out for the season, but he is gone for a good bit of the season and if Ottawa wants to make a playoff run I think Monahan can help quite a bit until Pinto returns.
Plus Monahan is fairly cheap

Ridly Greig is returning soon. He's much better defensively and can produce just as much if not better (better ES production too)

Sens have Stutzle, Norris, Greig, Pinto and even Giroux who can play center in the Top-9 this season

I'd target a guy like Dickinson way before Monhahan
