Why would the Hawks do this?

Sundqvist went for a 4th last year. Bortuzzo prob worth a 5th, Bogosian just went for a 7th. I undervalued Blais here thought a 3rd and decent prospect in Hamblin was enough but probably not. Leave him out and just Sundqvist and Bortuzzo for the picks. All depends on Blues record by deadline.

If I were a betting man, I might consider something like this more seriously. Lavoie has an interesting toolkit and he kind of fits the mold for how CHI wants to play, if he can take his game to the next level. I also think there is a decent chance that, in time, he could be much more than a bottom 6 forward. But, I typically hate gambling. Then again, even if we got a 2nd for Dickinson with retention, there is no guarantee that pick gets us someone who is half the player Lavoie is.

Hawks aren't blowing one of their two much coveted retention spots for such a small deal. If they retain on key players much desired by another team, they're likely to garner one or more high picks/coveted prospects out of a deal. Gotta save those valuable retention spots for THOSE trades (IMO)!

That's fair...I like Dickinson a lot though but you are right, at best we can a 2nd for him.

Yeah. Same here. But he'll be 29 next season and his contract is expiring anyway. We could always re-sign him in the summer if we like him that much.

Again, though, I am not a betting man. So, I see where the hesitation comes from. It's hard to justify this for an unproven guy who will be 24 next season and is on an expiring contract. If he can't take his game to the NHL level, then he is likely just a career AHLer, and it would be kind of sad to give up Dickinson for that, especially with retention.
