Hes not what they need though
He plays 0 defense and whats been the teams problem defense
We got Bertuzzi and Domi already for that
Our top 9 finally looks good and we finally got a working 4th line. Him coming could destabilize everything
Willy is having a performance for the ages and the top line looks good. Third line finally got going with Domi and Robertson showing chemistry and our 4th line is useable now with McMann looking good.
Lets not ruin it
He's not what they need but adding him at 950K for example isn't going to prevent them from adding what they need. Currently, Bertuzzi is in a top 6 role and he does have 3 points in his last 5 games, but if he doesn't build off of that then replacing him should be something that is explored (even if internally by moving Robertson up).
They probably shouldn't be messing with the 3rd line, but it's quite possible that they do end up needing to trade Robertson to make those additions that they need on the blue line. I know everyone wants to just dump Klingberg to make room for defensive additions, but moving Bertuzzi might be easier/provide more flexibility.
So, for a Kane addition to be bad, it really depends on how much it would cost to bring him in, how the top 9 players are doing at the time, and whether or not the defense is in shambles still. Right now, they need to figure out their dcore first, then they could look to see how effective the team defense is and if they could afford to bring in a pure offense winger.
I think the first step is to see if Timmins could provide the offense that Klingberg was meant to while playing 18+ minutes (preferably 20), and if he can, then adding Zadorov while removing Klingberg should suffice. If Timmins doesn't play as he was in the off-season, then the Leafs might need to bring in someone like Hanifin along with Zadorov.
