Keep it Simple OR Take a Risk

Description
The way I see it, the Canucks have two options going forward to accomplish adding a RHD man.

1. Keep it Simple - How I see this playing out is the Canucks either make a hockey trade to free up at least 1M in cap space by trading Beauvillier. Or to waive Beauvillier keeping the fwd depth within the organization and running a 22 man roster while signing Bear to play with Ian Cole. Garland has meshed so well with Suter Im not sure management wants to mess with that third lines success at this point.

2. Take a Risk - The other option would be to pay another team to pry a RHD free who can PK and play Toughs. Think Tanev or Pesce with varying costs. But it wont be cheap since the Canucks don't have cap space, they would need the team to take Beauvillier or Garland back which is likely counterintuitive for the club on the other end of the trade. The idea here would be to add a guy to play Toughs with Hughes while Hronek can feast on a second pairing with Cole.

What path do you think they should take?

I would wait until the 40-50 game point and see how they are doing. If they are showing signs of being legit, and you truly believe in this core, I think you have to go for it. But I wouldn't do that for a UFA. I would hope they made a move like Ottawa did for Chychrun last year. Try to find an age-appropriate, preferably right shot defenseman on a reasonable contract for a few years and pay the price if it doesn't include Lekkerimaki, Willander, or their 2025 1st.

Use some assets (even thought we don't have a lot) and try to set your core up to contend for the next 3-5 years. That is probably all we have with Miller's age anyways, unless you have another young C on the way at some point in that span...

Just don't use a prime asset for an expiring contract. It isn't worth it.

Issue here is Bear will be looking to sign within the next month so if that is the route Allvin wants to go then he needs to make a trade to free up space sooner than later which seems tough to do as its still early. I love your idea to trade for a Dman that fits long term who fits the timeline of the team. Its just so hard to pry those guys loose and I dont see how they get that guy without moving a top prospect. They will need Willander and Lekkerimaki during the peak OEL buyout years.

100% agree waiving Beauvillier wouldnt be ideal, but if they cant move him without adding a sweetner then I could see them doing it to improve the team while keeping him in the back pocket if injuries hit. IMO they would rather have Bear on the roster than Beauvillier. Would ideally fill their only hole on the roster.

Beauvillier would surely get claimed. I know he makes north of 4 million, but someone would take him.

We both agree Beauvillier is a good player, love his offensive tools. But if this was the case the team would also be able to trade him for something without a sweetner right? Wingers just seem to have no value on the trade market right now. My target would be Duclair from SJ, but the Sharks are going to want futures in that deal vs an expiring UFA roster player IMO.

Canucks could be open to adding Woo but there needs to be retention to make the cap work for Van. Needs to be at least 350k, ideally 500k so if a league min guy goes down they can call up Podkolzin.

That's fine, getting cap space back is what the Canucks want in the first place. If they have to retain 50% and still only get a mid round pick, that's arguably worse than getting all the cap space back, especially if they're going to try to trade for a RHD that's already under contract.

Say they have to retain 50% on Beauvilier and get like a 4th round pick back. They're going to have to pay more than a 4th round pick to get that 2 mil retained on another player in a trade to improve the RHD, especially again for a guy under contract, because then the salary retained by the original team applies for multiple years. But if they just have the cap space, then they possibly wouldn't need retained salary at all, or only very little

We’ll get a better offer by retaining 50% on Tanev in which we wouldn’t have to take back Beau at full pop + would get a better Pick/Prospect than Woo

Not 100% convinced on that but time will tell. I dont think Tanev is worth a first even half retained without the necessity of Beauvilier being in the deal.

Tanevs No trade List is apparently built to keep him in Canada limiting Calgarys options. Edm is capped out and currently not in the position to buy, MTL isnt a buyer, Peg could be on the list as they are for most. So basically leave T.O and Van. Would be suprised to see them fetch more than Beauvillier, Woo and a First.. Thats a haul for an aging Pk specialist. Im not convinced Allvin goes this route anyway, I think they'll find a way to open up cap and sign Bear.

Depends what happens and how close VAN thinks to being able to actually take a run, but I’d just wait and try to sign him as a Free Agent if so were VAN

EDM & TOR on the other hand are in more of a Win Now mode. TOR could look to sign Tanev to a Team Friendly Home Town Discount, which would alleviate the sting of the price it will cost to acquire him this season

EDM has far more appealing Trade Assets and we would be fine to take Ceci back as a replacement player and guy we can flip for more assets next season, so they’re definitely in it

I’m sure Tanev would have no problem going to the States for a few months to play for a contender and try to win the cup either. SEA to play with his brother, NJD, PIT or hot destinations like VEG, TBL, FLA & LAK all have their appeal

When Healthy, not only is Tanev a fantastic Shot Blocking PK Specialist, but he’s one of the best skating and smartest shut down d-men in the league who can relive Stars like McDavid from the puck or steer the play away from them

Given the amount of Demand, I’m confident Tanev will bring back a great return, just like Ben Chiarot and others have

Well said. Get a real asset that will be here longer than a UFA albeit Tanev is still good.

I'd be happy getting a guy like Tanev who is a rental, but I don't touch a 1st or premium prospect. Maybe a 1st if it is conditional on getting to round 3 of the playoffs or something like that....
