You wouldn't be able to do double retention on Vrana this TDL- players are limited to two retentions on their contract. Detroit is already eating 50%, and the Blues are eating whatever they're eating. A third team can't get involved and retain more in that case. That's something that hurt Arizona a few years ago with Kessel at the deadline.

Best case scenario is probably that the Blues retain half and Vrana is at about 1.25. The math may work out anyway for PIttsburgh in that case by the trade deadline.

2. I don't think any GM is going to spend a 2nd on Vrana unless STL eats 50% and he's having a really solid season come TDL.

He's got 4 points through 9 games, TDL is about 60 games into the season. He'd only be worth a 2nd if he's getting 50% retained and is around 40PTs imo. Dude hasn't played a ton of hockey the past 3 years for obvious reasons, and while it's great that he's better and back in the league, he has vastly less value.

I know you said "any team". Hawks won't use 1 of the 2 retention slots they have left for a 4th round pick. They have their own players to retain on at deadline. AND there can only be 2 retentions on the same salary.

Any team means you still have to find the team that will retain for you. Just letting you know Hawks are not that team.

But as we realized this is all moot because no one can retain on Vrana.

STL can retain, just not a 3rd party.
