Hawks decline. It's going to take more then that to dump Kling and Reeves. Unless that Toronto 1st keeps flirting with being a lottery pick!

My longer term plan is to move up in the 1st. That's just me though. I want to get as many top 15 picks as possible. Moving a 2nd that's turning out to be a later 2nd into a 1st is a big help in that direction.

The leafs would prob send Reaves down to either get claimed or cost 200k. Kling will not be traded despite how bad that contract looks especially not with a first given jow little assets the leafs have to replace him.

This would never happen anyways. Brad won’t part with the first and the leafs committed to the Kling experiment. Reaves would get waived.

I forgot he was a Treliving signing. He'll never sell that 1 year contract. It would look AWFUL. You're right.

1st and 2nd don't matter obviously, it's the number of the pick of course. If the Leafs pull it together, they likely will, and the Knucks falter, they likely will, there is zero chance the Hawks should take the dumps of Kling and Reeves to move up 15 slots (or so) in the draft....who cares if that 15 slots is going from 2nd to 1st which is only a magic line in the sand. The odds of drafting a NHL player between slots 30 and 45 as example, improve only very so slight and they aren't good in either case. Now if the Leafs pick is a lottery pick, then that is a different story...but it won't be.

So I do ultimately agree with you. The nuance in where I'm a bit different of opinion is that I intend to move up into the top 15. I'd trade the TBL 1st and TOR 1st (in this hypothetical) AND whatever else it took to go get your guy. I 100% agree that late 1sts and 2nds are magic beans. If you think a guy is a top 10 or top 15 pick...that's not a likely to be a magic bean. We don't know what the standings will be at the end of the day, but let's pretend WAS doesn't make the playoffs...MAYBE it might be in their best interest to get 2/3 picks for that #10 pick?

I hear you, but unlike the NFL, we don't see a lot of trades for picks for a good reason. Draft prospects in the NHL are notoriously difficult to predict long term versus the NFL. The separation from juniors hockey to the NHL is massive comparably from college football to the NFL. The kids are also drafted a lot younger and many are not developed into adult bodies yet. Just look at drafts 10 years ago and how many players turn out to be where they thought they would be...wildly inconsistent.

Absolutely not for the Hawks. They are adding about $4.5 - 5m in cap, not to mention Reaves for two additional seasons at $1.35m just to move up about 25 draft spots… no thanks.

Valid. I guess I just think there's a ton of reasons behind that though. NFL doesn't have a minor league and NFL doesn't draft players until they're at least 3 years removed for high school. NHL drafts at a very young age and many teams don't allow those kids to develop properly. I hate the Red Wings, but Stevie Y does this better than anyone. He doesn't lose many trades and he'll just keep drafting until the team is ready. He's not rushing anything because the exact moment you rush something...you're ruining the rebuild. Sometimes it takes longer, but you always need to build from within.

That's fair, I forgot about the additional years. It's manageable though. Maybe the CHI 3rd?

BUT also, while I do think TOR will make the playoffs...the more picks in the Atlantic you can get...the more likely one of them won't be in the playoffs.
