I don't think adding a forward via trade is the solution. It's pretty obvious that there are too many new guys on the team, particularly in the bottom 6, so it's no surprise that there's a lack of chemistry there. They can pay that hefty price for Laughton and maybe it works out, but if it doesn't then you've overpaid for a 3C who takes up a considerable amount of cap space, and they still have the same problem.
CBJ needs to cut down on defenders, so they probably reject this trade. I know you are suggesting that they trade him elsewhere but it's easier said than done, especially with Klingberg's trade protection.
I don't think putting Knies on the 4th line will help him at all. As for Gregor in the top 6, it might work but the Leafs do need players in the bottom 6 who can contribute. It doesn't help them much if they have a bunch of guys who can potentially play in the top 6 effectively but are useless in the bottom 6.
