Description
I don't really buy the report out of Dahliwal but let's play it out.

Canucks add a legit top 4 RHD with familiarity of the team and Hughes if they wanted to pair them together again. They also add a young player with some potential to improve the defensive mix. They take on two contracts that currently are a negative but players who in the past have shown the characteristics Toccett seems to like. The biggest risk is that the Canucks would need to buy out Coleman in the off-season which ironically would help offset OEL'S Contract for a couple of years when it is at its highest. Best case scenario he can fill a role similarly to PDG.

The other risk is that they lose two offensive players currently playing in the bottom 6. Injuries or slumps in the top 6 would leave them with few internal option to move up the lineup. Offensive winger have been cheap to acquire recently though and 2M in cap space the Canucks would have some options at TDL to add another winger.
Transactions
1.
VAN
  1. Coleman, Blake (750 000 $ retained)
  2. Tanev, Christopher
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2024 (CGY)
Détails additionnels:
Flames fans will hate this but moving Coleman's contract has a cost and while Tanev is an improvement on Myers, there isn't such a large gap to make for both the difference in value between Beauvillier and Coleman because of the age and term on Coleman's contract. Myers and Beauvillier should be able to recoup a 2nd or better asset at TDL.
CGY
  1. Beauvillier, Anthony
  2. Myers, Tyler (1 500 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Canucks add a better RHD option in the top 4 and a player better suited to play Toccett's system in the bottom 6.
2.
VAN
  1. Boqvist, Adam
  2. Robinson, Eric
Détails additionnels:
Canucks add another Dman on the right side with the hope he can be another puck mover in a depth role.Boqvist still has some upside but needs to prove he can be an everyday player if he isn't a PP option. He would get a good opportunity playing sheltered minutes with Cole. Robinson, is essentially a cap dump as he is or was recently? in the AHL. He has shown to be a decent bottom 6 player in the past and would remain an option in the PDG, Coleman, Lafferty role if injuries occur.
CBJ
  1. Garland, Conor
Détails additionnels:
Columbus has wanted to move a Dman to free up a spot on th backend and add some scoring. Garland is the best player in the trade by far and while his contract makes him a player difficult to move, it is a reasonable market rate.

Why would the Flames pay to move Coleman?? If Myers and Beauvillier are 2nd round picks in your mind, Calgary would significantly prefer the picks. The Flames aren't adding a good piece of their bottom 6 to a deal with Tanev to diminish Tanev's value, that's just not the way that works.

They would move him because it sounds like they want to retool and his contract is likely the hardest to move outside of Huberdeau.
I don't think Beauvillier and Myers recoup a 2nd each but do think between them, they would replace or improve upon the 2nd round pick.

I like Tanev but he's still one shot block away from being on LTIR and being worth nothing when TDL comes around and his value is at its highest. I'm sure he could fetch a late first especially if retained at TDL but it is a risk and IMO getting rid of Coleman's contract is going to cost a lot more than a late first.

I don't expect flames fans to get on board and I definitely get that my reasoning isn't what we usually see in these AGMs but appreciate the comment.

His contract is fine for what he does, he had nearly 20 goals and 40 points last season, 1/3rd of an elite defensive line and with the cap going up it will dilute the last few years of his contract. Even if they wanted to buy him out in the tail end of his deal the cap hit is 1.6M/year which is not a lot for a team retooling. There's no need for a selling team to take on other teams problems without a significant payment to do so. Coleman has fulfilled his contract as well as the Flames could have asked, he's a typical UFA signing that is probably a little overpaid but doing exactly what's expected of him. I see zero reason to move him even throughout a rebuild

i can see VAN doing a Garland for Tanev deal (if that could be worked out). But i don't see them adding to much value to that as it is no a long term solution. better to wait out the last year of myers or trade him at the deadline 50% retained for an asset, as well as Beauvillier 50% retained for an asset.

in terms of RHD it would be better to look at Boqvist or Peeke instead who are younger and more of a long term solution IMO

There's something there with Columbus, take your pick of Boqvist or Peeke (Boqvist probably costs slightly more), and feel free to throw in one of Robinson (who is currently in the AHL, but is good friends with Gaudreau), Roslovic (who is playing well, but on an expensive deal), or Bemstrom (cheap and playing well).

The sticking point is also the elephant in the room: Garland's deal. He's an upgrade, and the best player in the deal, but Columbus has a ton of young forwards that need both playing time and an extension: Texier, KJ, Marchenko, Sillinger, and Chinakhov (who's in the AHL now but only because he's returning from a long-term injury suffered last season). Add on Laine, Jenner, Gaudreau, and Fantilli, and the top-9 is already really crowded. Garland is probably playing third-line minutes after this season, so there would need to be some retention, or we risk losing one or more of the younger forwards due to the cap.
