Am I missing something here? Why would Ottawa do this?
I don't think "Ottawa would want to do this" but there is fans who are scapegoating Chabot, just like some did with Spezza back in the days.
But if you actually pay attention, the team's transition is really HURT by not having Chabot. And this time, Brannstrom is not here to lessen the blow as he is also excellent in transition (Chabot among the elite in the league)
Sure you still have Sanderson and Chychrun but Ottawa is a much better team with Chabot and Brannstrom in the lineup
That said, Weegar is also excellent but giving up MORE (Detroit's 1st + 2nd) than what they got in return for DeBrincat just to make that swap is not going to be a good move

Weever's contract runs until he's 37 years old. That's a big yikes for me.
If our window was closing and we needed to win a cup in the next 2 years before it all fell apart... maybe... but not now.
If I'm giving up Chabot and a 1st and 2nd... I'd rather be talking to TBL about Cernak and seeing what we'd need to add.
Cernak? Weegar has quite more value...
Chabot + 1st + 2nd has to get you a LOT more than Cernak. Adding would make it outrageously bad.
