I don't hate it, I just feel if we're gonna give up our number 1 defenseman, we need a younger D with potential to grow coming back. Clifton is what he is at this point in his career, which is a good player, but the Caps have to start looking at young guys with potential in trades, especially trades of high end guys like Carlson. That being said, I wouldn't be mad if this deal went through.

Absolutely not

We don't need a pp qb and we don't need a 3rd defensmen making over 8 million. Particularly not an old one who is a pp merchant

Fair points. That said, he's on the books until 2025-26 at which point the Sabres will have 10 on the roster with a $64M cap hit (including Carlson). Add in Mitts and a projected $6M and, assuming that the cap is projected to be in the $92M range, it will allow for some $20M to fill out a roster that has its top three centers, top two wingers and top-4 defensemen in place. The idea has always been, lock up your top players at their market value cap-hit and fill in the rest with entry-level deals and complimentary players. Perhaps a retention of some $2M would alleviate the potential Cap problems?

In addition, Carlson's actual salary is $6M so it's Pegula-approved.

Nah
I’m with @littlejerryseinfeld here

It’s not just about bringing in good players at this point,
It’s about bringing in the RIGHT ones

We have all kinds of talent
Any additions we make- ESPECIALLY ones where we are giving up quality assets- should be players who provide skill sets we are currently short on
Not trying to build an “AllStar” team here, but a well rounded one that can win in the playoffs

We ABSOLUTELY can NOT bring in a player with a redundant skill set- not at that Cap hit- NO WAY

Whelp, I really didn't give up much in a bottom-six forward that's easily replaced (Jost is in Krebs'r role right now) and a second rounder. In addition, I also replaced a bottom-pairing d-man (Clifton) with a legit top of the lineup, Cup-winning defenseman for an extra $4.67M.

Two questions for you and jerry: would $2M retention work? If not, who are you spending real money on for an upgrade??

This isn't the movie miracle lol, this team desperately needs more high end talent that isn't in the form of elc players who may or may not bust. And he gave up basically nothing to do it.

It’s not JUST the big Cap hit
We don’t need another PP guy, Dahlin & Power have that locked up already
And you’re getting rid of one of the few guys we have that can play physical (Clifton)

Also, (we’ve discussed this before),
Krebs is more valuable than u give credit for
You remind me of Sbroads CONSTANTLY complaining about Reinhart in his first few years, wanting to get rid of him bc he wasn’t developing into a “star” player quickly enough

And finally,
don’t think the Caps do this deal anyways. They’d likely demand a 1st as a starting point for a deal & build from there

Regardless,
we just don’t need another “offensive” defenseman
Yes, i know Carlson is more than that. But his skill set doesn’t bring much that we don’t already have, & at his Cap hit it just isn’t a good move as far as “building the team” goes
*if the Caps held $4mil, then he’d be worth discussing imo,
but it’s hard to see that happening in real life

Krebs will not beat out any of Buffalo's top three centers, nor will he beat out any of the top four wingers when Quinn returns. I can't see him beating out Benson for a top-nine spot and I doubt he beats out Savoie for the last spot.

He's a fourth-line center in Buffalo and I think he brings some solid qualities in that role. But he can be replaced.

There seems to be a majority in Sabreland that continue to vociferously denounce any suggestion of adding more offense to the equation. Yet, the Sabres still struggle to beat top-notch goaltenders. The trend is continuing this year as they've managed only one goal against Shesterkin and two against Sorokin while making Allen look like an upper echelon goalie by potting only one goal against him tonight.

Buffalo is 28th in the league with 2.17 goals-for/gm and have the 7th-worst PP converting only 9.5% of their chances.

It’s been 6 games, there’s SEVENTY SIX still to go
You have the prerogative to freak out this early if u want,
but I’m just not there yet

We’re still a VERY YOUNG team, who’s developing & trying to find itself. We all want it to happen as quickly as possible, but it rarely works like that

Overreacting is RARELY the answer though

There is absolutely zero indication they are on a path to anything other than mediocrity again. This isnt NJ or COL. Its not even the leafs. This is just a waste of talent. Bordering on sad. It is genuinely my fondest wish for the Sabres to be a perennial contender, to give die hard hockey fans in buffalo something to really cheer about. We have the same wish in that regard, but I am telling you, that can't happen until the owner is run out of the building. He can't help himself, and neither can the spineless cronies he hired for their front office.

Never change, Fitz. Always moving the goalposts, calling the kettle black and/or picking out one fragment of a post that you feel you can easily defend while dismissing the rest you have trouble with. Not sure where you got the overreaction from, but I simply laid out my stance (without the use of caps and/or aggressive absolutes) on a Caps player that may be available if WSH is looking to start a rebuild/retool. Carlson's a top-notch defenseman, one that eats big minutes, is excellent in transition and can get the puck through to the net from the point (see how many blocks the Rags had in game one.)

You answered one of my questions by saying that a $4M retention may move the needle for you, but the second one revolved around who you or jerry would spend significant money on.

Personally, I think they'll pull out of this with the personnel they have. Donnie Maestro has them transitioning to more of a defensive structure that has them 10th in the league in SA/gm and 7th on the PK, both huge improvements over last season and both areas that Sabreland in general, and buzzards in particular, clamored for this off season. And they're doing it with two UFA signings on the blueline that a majority of Sabreland hate, as they were hoping that KAGM would land a higher-quality d-man.

Have at it, Fitz.
