Canucks fix RD if Calgary is a full rebuild

Description
This would be closer to the deadline if Vancouver is solidly top 3 in the Pacific and Calgary is out of playoffs and decides on a full rebuild, finally. Probably depends on how good Calgary thinks Willander is, which probably depends on how he's playing up to that point in the season. I'm going to guess both Canucks and Calgary fans will hate this.

Also would have swapped Tanev for Backlund in this trade, but don't think that happens with the extension and Calgary probably wants the leadership for the rebuild.
Transactions
VAN
  1. Tanev, Christopher
  2. Weegar, MacKenzie
Détails additionnels:
If Calgary is doing a big rebuild it doesn't make sense to keep Weegar. The next 3 years are the best value for his contract, which would be waisted in a rebuild. Garland won't mess up the rebuild window and can be flipped at some point during the rebuild with retention for value.
CGY
  1. Garland, Conor
  2. Myers, Tyler
  3. Poolman, Tucker
  4. Willander, Tom [Liste de réserve]
  5. Choix de 1e ronde en 2024 (VAN)
  6. Choix de 1e ronde en 2025 (VAN)
Détails additionnels:
Lets Calgary replace Weegar with a high-end RD prospect for a full rebuild

1st and Willander is for Myers for Weegar trade. 2025 1st is for the Garland for Tanev trade (top 10 protected). Poolman is bonus value since his LTIR won't affect Calgary during the rebuild.

Sorry, not sure if you're saying overpay or underpay? Part of why I post here is to see what people think players are worth. You know part of the fun. I don't think I'm so far off that it warrants that reaction.

If they are rebuilding that would be a hell of an offer that I would certainly accept if I were Calgary

Too much you think? I wanted to do Willander a 1st plus say a 2nd and 4th, but it seemed too low.

NO, why would the Canucks trade there 11th overall defenceman for players that don’t guarantee you success right now

Big overpay for the Canucks; for a contender maybe not.

Early returns look like Willander will be a keeper and those Canucks 1st's may still be fairly high the next couple years, so that's a big payout. If they were only a Weegar and a Tanev away from being Cup contenders then maybe you look at it but this team isn't close to being that yet.

I have no problem with the argument of not trading a prospect and picks for a win-now move. But Weeger is a huge difference maker, like ~top 10 RD on a surprisingly reasonable contract. I think this does make the Canucks a contender, although with Colorado and Vegas looking amazing still probably 3rd in the west. It seems like maybe should be downgraded from two 1st, to a 1st (this years), 2nd and 4th, but haven't heard from a lot of Flames fans to hear how they value this.

I not against trading a prospect to get better now, but i believe the upside of keeping Willander is greater than trading him right now

Waiting for the Calgary fans to come say this package isn’t enough lol had some guy tell me a Zadorov rental with no retention was worth more than a 2nd and 3rd

Totally fair, I don't think I'd have the guts to actually pull the trigger on the trade if I was Rutherford in this spot. But thought it was a cool idea.

The only Calgary fan to reply so far said it was "a hell of an offer". I think I might have actually made a reasonable offer or close to it.

Yeah that Zadorov assessment seems off. I'd think he gets around a 2nd or a 3rd with 50% retention at the deadline. I think Schenn at last year's deadline gives you a good comp for his value.

Yeah some people overvalue the hell out their players lol I remember last year I made a mock ROR trade, and was told that it wasn’t nearly enough. Funny thing is, a week later he was traded to TOR for less than what was in my mock trade lol

Some things are very hard to value especially at the high end. But for a Zadorov type trade we've got tons of comps. Like you never know, Chiarot got trade for a 1st, a 4th and prospect so anything is possible. But we know depth D like Zadorov go for 3rd or maybe a 2nd if you can retain/make the cap work at the deadline.

Its far too much for Vancouver to pay. Not realistic at all and borderline absurd.

Show me the last trade you saw in the modern NHL where a borderline rebuilding team traded away 2 1st rounders AND their top prospect....

Adam Boqvist · $894,167 (2018 8th overall)
2021 1st round pick (CHI - #12 - Cole Sillinger)
2021 2nd round pick (CHI - #44 - Aleksi Heimosalmi)
2022 1st round pick (CHI - #6 - David Jiricek) [Conditional]

for

Seth Jones · $5,400,000
2021 1st round pick (TBL - #32 - Nolan Allan)
2022 6th round pick (CBJ - #173 - Dominic James)

I could keep going back and find more.

You're also ignoring that the second 1st was listed also for the Tanev Garland swap and ignoring the cost of getting rid of Myers. I did say I was on the edge of two firsts vs 1st, 2nd and 4th. Based on feed back I would adjust down to 1st, 2nd and 4th.

If CGY was going for a rebuild I'd take it. I like Weegar, but that's a very fair price. Tanev is a warrior, but he looks like he lost a step this year. Garland could be a decent fit, and Myers(50%) could be a rental at the deadline.

Thanks, I try to be reasonable in my proposals. But who really knows what any player is actually worth?

Hardly a fair comparison. Seth jones was 25? at the time and Chicago was not in a rebuild mode as they still had Kane and Toews and were going for a cup (whether right or wrong is up for personal debate).

Vancouver is in no way shape or form in any position to be giving up a package like that for those two players.

Just want to clarify Blackhawks:
- 55 points in 56 games in the 2021 season.
- 72 points in 70 games in 2019/20 season.
- 84 points in 82 games in the 2018/19 season.
- 76 points in 82 games in the 2017/18 season.
you said name a borderline rebuilding team. I think we've found a team that meets that definition. Jones may have been younger, but Hawks paid way more than I proposed in this trade and he needed to be resigned. Weegar is locked up to a reasonable contract.

Further, whether you like it or not, Canucks are going for it and at least they look to be on the upswing, unlike the Hawks. The Canucks realistically have a 3-4 year window which is Demko/Hughes contracts.

Like you can say, I'd rather keep the prospect and not rush it. That's a valid opinion. Who's to say, who is right? But if the Canucks want to make a win-now move that makes them a cup contender, this does it. The value clearly is reasonable based on past comps.

Like I love Willander and how he looks so far this season (although I wish we had taken Benson). But prospects miss all the time. I wish we'd traded Juolevi 3 games into his first season, but we didn't. There's always pros and cons.
