Description
The majority of the roster was pretty set in stone before the preseason even began, but I will explain all the new additions:
McMichael: From talks and from watching him last postseason with Hershey and this preseason, he has grown a lot more confident in his abilities, and has developed a strong 2-way game that benefits the defensive side of the puck. Carberry has pretty much penciled him into the 23 man roster and I believe he'll get a legit chance at sticking.
Malenstyn: Fits the 4th line perfectly and has been on the edge for multiple seasons now. With Hathaway gone, that spot was open and he was all but a guarantee to take that.
Miroshnichenko: Has been extremely impressive this preseason thus far, especially playing on the top line with Ovechkin and Backstrom. Will at least get 10 games at the start to rotate in with the top six barring injury or lack of performance (Mantha gets scratched, Milano/Oshie fills in on the 3rd). Would be hard to keep up past that point, especially when Patches comes back, and would likely necessitate a trade to be made.
Phillips: Another player that has shown a lot of skill this preseason and really should have gotten a chance before (thanks Calgary). With not being waiver exempt, I feel that he will stay as the Capital's 13th forward for the entire season, and can jump into the bottom six if a spark is needed.
Alexeyev: Was a lock for that bottom pairing role before the Edmundson trade and, showing strong play this preseason, is a lock again for the time being. Once Edmundson returns from injury and the cap is played around with some, he will likely have a rotation with Edmundson for 6/7th defenseman.
Haman Aktell: Really strong play this preseason, looking very steady. Will serve as the Caps' 7th defenseman and will at least get 10 games. Likely will be sent down after Edmundson returns but will be one of the first call-ups whenever injury occurs.

I like your reasoning but I do think Malenstyn loses the battle for the 4th line winger position to Protas or they waive NAK and have Protas play the right side.

Can't see a world in which Malenstyn pushes out Protas or where Mantha gets scratched. I know there's a lot of upset people right now with Mantha but to play devils advocate, having one bad preseason game (after previously having a good one) with the B team is not cause for scratching him, and scratching him isn't going to fix his problems, he needs to be on the ice for that. I do like keeping Haman-Aktell up quite a lot, I hope he gets some time this year to show off his skill in the regular season. Personally, I think it will likely end up along the lines of:
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson
McMichael-Kuznetsov-Mantha
Milano-Strome-Oshie
NAK/Malenstyn-Dowd-Protas

Malenstyn is the perfect 4th liner for the Capitals. While I do believe that Protas deserves to stay with the NHL team, he does need to develop a little bit more. Phillips will 100% not clear waivers and deserves to be with the team. When it comes down to players, Protas is waiver exempt and that's why he'll be sent down. Mantha should perform better in this new system and I'm not that low on him. He just seems like a decently obvious choice along with Milano for a middle six healthy scratch to get Phillips/Miro games.

Malenstyn is a good 4th liner but I doubt there's much risk of him being lost on waivers, with similar players like Pitlick already clearing waivers the last couple days. Protas has already shown that hes a better player than Malenstyn and excels defensively, so I don't see any incentive for Washington to send him back to the AHL when he's ready and capable of NHL action, they've learned their lesson with the Stephenson/Hagelin situation from a few years ago. I'd be surprised to See Mantha/Milano scratched in favor of Phillips or Miro unless it's due to injuries. Miro is good but needs a year in the AHL, and Phillips (like Snively I'd say) is a decent spot starter but not good enough to justify a rotation of starts like what the Caps tried last year with Strome, Mantha, Eller, etc.
