You're entirely correct. Trades like the one proposed here goes diametrically opposite the way that Yzerman is doing things. Building through the draft is the only way to build a dynasty in a salary capped league, the way Holland did it pre-cap is no longer an option. That means that you hang on to your prospects and picks until such a time as to what you receive for them in a trade is the last little piece you need in order to win the cup. No more Järnkrok and a 2nd for Legwand for this team...
It's still only four years since Yzerman took over the Helm and we have only seen two of his draft picks turn into regular players as of now. There are a whole slew of them wainting in the wings that are getting real close, Mazur, Kasper, Söderblom, Edvinsson, and Johansson could be on the roster already when we approach the trade deadline this season. There are good things waiting in the wings the next couple of years but as of now we should be aware that, with only two of his picks on the roster, it's way too early to start trading away any assets. When our roster consists of at least 50% own products and with at least as many in the system that is the time when you have enough that you can consider using them as trade capital.
By all means be opportunistic, trades like the DeBrincat and the Petry ones are good for us considering what we got and what we gave up and don't say no when something falls in our lap but selling the farm for a superstar that will do nothing other than getting us into the first round for a year of two before he goes UFA is not a recipe for long term success. We should expect to see the current behaviour of signing veteran stop-gap players and trading them for picks at the deadline continue for another three or four years yet.
I may disagree with the idea that the practice of trading vets for picks will continue for another 3-4 years, I'd say another two years? .. by the time the contracts of players like Compher and Copp are expiring or close to expiring is when the youngsters like Raymond and Berggren are clearly established and the likes of Mazur, Kasper and Danielson developing well (this is in 4-5 years) ..
Looking at the Wings in 5 years, there will be Larkin at 32 years of age, Raymond at 26, Kasper and Danielson at 24, Berggren at 28, Soderblom 27, Seider and Johansson 27, Edvinson 25, Wallinder 26, Cossa 26 ... those will be the days where they start buying veteran back-up for their core stars! At a reasonable rate, of course... guys like Compher and Copp at the age of 33 could be worth two year re-sign deals at lower cap hits if they're still any good, or they could go for other guys who have hit the market by then to bolster their younger core.
