Interesting but Detroit still probably declines.
Not to critique the value, but as of right now both of these players would be rentals. This is a lot for a team that's a playoff hopeful to give for two rentals that would still not guarantee playoffs.

Detroit passes, Backlund is 34 and way past his prime. He holds no value for us. There has been rumblings of Detroit possibly having interest in Noah Hanifin. But i like our future D core a lot. Plus with J T Compher and Andrew Copp as our 2C and 3C respectively. We really don't need Backlund.

Decline. Backlund doesn't fit at all. If we need another center, we call up Kasper.

And we are loaded on the left side.

I agree that Backlund is not a good fit for Detroit’s timeline because they’re still at least a few years away from competing, but saying he’s far past his prime is completely wrong. He just had a career year points wise and was arguably the Flames best forward, at worst second best.

Hanifin makes sense because he’d instantly become Detroit’s second best d-man and would be an ideal partner for Seider. And he’s still only 26. But it would take a first and two seconds to acquire him, or equivalent pieces

Detroit already have the best prospect pipeline in the entire league on LD. and we have five waiver eligible LD on the roster. Our weak spot is RD not LD.

Trading for Hanifin makes zero sense for Detroit. Why would we spend assets on the position that already is our strongest and deepest when we have big holes elsewhere? If Hanifin had been a right shooter and cost controlled it would make sense but he's neither.
