Chicago doesn’t have the team to win now with McDavid. If he can’t win with the Oilers he certainly isn’t winning with what the Blackhawks have to offer right now. This could blow up in the Blackhawks face terribly if he ended up not resigning. I’m hoping he tests free agency when his contract expires. Blackhawks should be better by then and maybe playing with Bedard can incentivize him to come to Chicago.

I know this isn't meant to be entirely serious, but I would honestly rather see this rebuild through than spend a ton of assets acquiring McDavid. He is certainly an amazing player and it would be very easy to argue he is worth the price. It just seems like the perfect recipe for premature cap troubles and a depleted prospect pool in the future.
