Description
Chronologically:

1) Obtain Toronto’s 2024 1st by trading for TJ Brodie vs future considerations;
2) 3-way trade between MTL/PIT/ANA in which Montreal retains 50% on Brodie (1 year) and Petry (2 years); Brodie ends up in Pittsburgh to make them cap compliant and Petry in Anaheim, where his reduced rate doesn’t prevent signing Drysdale/Zegras long term. Pittsburgh pays a 1st to Anaheim and a 2nd to Montreal; Anaheim gives a 2nd to Montreal for subsidizing Petry for 2 years.

Paying a 1st to move their best defensive RD when there are other ways to get cap compliant is a really bad idea.

Every team says no.

Petry won’t waive to go to SJS, so why would he go to ANA?

ACGM has some bizarre player valuations. Brodie and Petry are two liabilities based on common perception here.

Most seem to have their own opinion on what players' values are without really considering both sides of the trade, or what is realistic.

Brodie doesn't have negative value let alone cost a 1st rounder to dump

Almost certain TOR could give Brodie away for free before having to attach picks to him if they're really just trying to get cap compliant.

Also, Monahan @ 6+ for a year got MTL a 1st a couple years out. If, and I say if, there needs to be a pick included to move ~5 mil it would much more likely be the '26 1st and not the '24 1st; all while having protection(s) on it.

Petry will waive for teams close to his family, and his family is not on the western half of the continent.

I'm good with MTL fleecing these deals in our favour but it just isn't realistic.

Who else would Toronto move to be cap compliant? One of the UFAs they just signed? Likely not. A player with remaining term? Hardly. Brodie seems like the only candidate plausible and, notwithstanding his play, any team will likely require at least a first to take on 5M AAV in this crucial cap crunch; the only way to avoid this for Toronto would be taking on a lower AAV player (>2M) in return to make the incentive price to drop a little.

The argument that the 1st round pick from Toronto should be later (2026) and protected (top-10) is indeed good.

Including both Brodie and Petry deals in the same timeframe is over ambitious; I’d retrospectively simplify thing by focusing on Pittsburgh and a third party for Petry to land with retention; work in progress!

What colour is the sky in your world 😂? I can guarantee the Leafs won’t be burning a 1st to dump Brodie - an elite defensive dman on a reasonable, expiring deal. Among the most preposterous ideas I have seen on this site, and that is saying something 🤦🏻.
