Norris and Chychrun will be here for more than 20 games combined, both are goal scorers. Kubalik and Tarasenko will more than replace 27 goals of Cat and 5 goals or less of any other forward we lost that isn’t good

How does it shifted to "rate a player by itself"?

I see people using =/- as a way to analyze if a player is good defensively pretty regularly, like that Leafs fan did in this very thread.

Don't want to continue the silly +/- argument but Sanderson was 20 y/o... It shouldn't have been expected of him to be as good as some of the best D-men defensively in the league... I am not sure why these things need to be pointed out

1 - There was no shift. I was paraphrasing this: "+/- is GF%, which could be useful but looking at +/- without any context is not going to say anything". Without any context tends to equate to being the sole form of analysis. If that's not quite what you meant, fine. But that's kinda what it sounds like.

2 - And we all see people using xG share like that 100 times as much. So what?
