Description
Getting a 1C is looking more and more difficult so I figured it’s probably simpler and more sensible to really improve the defensive core
In my opinion we’ve got half of an elite Dman unit with McAvoy, Lindholm, Carlo etc and if Lohrei fulfills his expectations and becomes the top 4 defenseman we expect him to be then we’ll be in great shape going forward
If Elias Lindholm doesn’t make it to free agency we’re gonna be left with a ton of cap space and not much to spend it on
Hanifin brings the size and mobility we’ve desperately needed and 5.5 is probably a bit low but I think he would take a hometown discount
Matt Roy would be an excellent partner for Lohrei on the bottom pairing I think LA will probably do everything they can to keep him but if he goes to market he would be the final piece of an elite defensive core
Hartman comes in on a shorter term contract that wouldn’t block any of the young prospects from getting opportunities in the Top 6 it also doesn’t prevent the Bruins from acquiring a young Top 6 center if one becomes attainable
The Nashville teams of 5-6 years ago had a lot of success with this approach and nowadays Carolina is a cup contender despite not having elite top 6 scorers
I still think an elite defense can win a cup in today’s league and with a top 5 goalscorer like Pasta alongside other productive wingers (hopefully Lysell pops too) I think this team would get right back into the mix

Personally, I don't see it. Mediocre line of center aside, you'll have Lysell who may or may not be ready to be a top6 F and Marchand potentially regressing. Bottom-6 has also lots of ifs.

Every Cup winning team has a top line center and strong C depth in general. Nashville didn't win and Carolina is also not able to advance because they're missing (at least) a scorer.

Could be worse like a 6x5 contract with a non-trade clause for a regressing 3rd line C wink

no duh lmao. You act as if fans are supposed to blindly support their GMs decisions. Lou SUCKS, the Pageau deal sucks. The Lee deal sucks. The Pulock and Pelech deals are too long. Palmieri... gross. I could go on

I honestly really like this take, I feel like there might be better options in terms of pairings depending on how lorhrei assimilates into the NHL.

Based on what I'm seeing and assuming Lohrei is going to be a bigger Matt Grzelcyk it might be worth to look for a bigger scoring threat as a 3rd pairing, even if it's a weaker all around defensman. I think one of the d prospects boston picked up from chicago was advertised as such and might fit in a pairing here.

This could free up more space for a higher quality center option if market provides.

hes much more of a 20 goal scorer. Only had 19 expected goals this season and his team is losing their franchise center. That center depth weakened a lot. Duclair got a 5th and hes a similar enough player. It would be a mistake giving 6

It certainly isn’t perfect but it’s just an idea I had on how to best utilize the cap space next offseason
Just out of curiosity what are your thoughts on the 1C situation and what Sweeney should do next offseason?

If DeBrusk hits 25 goals again this season it will be 4 seasons of at least 25 goals I’d say that’s enough to earn a 4x6

25 goals isnt a big deal nowadays. You can overpay him, but 6 mil isnt market value. Im telling you hes gonna be close to 4-5 mil barring a breakout

I think this works. Roy isn't the target I'd have next offseason, especially if Mitchell moves well in the lineup. If Zacha works, go Hartman. If he doesn't, we might need to spend up on a center.

Like to see Alex Carrier or trade for Liljegren when Matthews gets 14 million from TOR as 3RD unless a rookie pans out. A Defense first look could mean Regula gets looks too.

And I'd sign DeBrusk at 6 million for 8 years.

Yeah Roy is the one player I chose that probably won’t go to market the Kings really seem to value him and I totally agree on your point about Zacha I think that if we get to the TDL and he’s really underperformed It’s a good idea to go after Lindholm pretty aggressively and if that doesn’t work Scheifele could unfortunately be the next best option

It's actually probably a little under. DeBrusk over the last 2 seasons ranks 22nd among LW in goals & 35th in pts. Among RW's he's 15th in goals and 31st in points.

He’s also scoring way above his expected total. He’s due for regression

His S% over the last two years is pretty close to his career S% so nothing of a red flag there. He gets a lot of his goals in the dirty area and off rebounds which can be tricky in calculating xGF

That franchise center only assisted on 17% of DeBrusk goals over the last two seasons LMAO. Marchand & McAvoy each have assisted on roughly 33% of his goals over the last two years.

My point isnt about Bergeron assiting on his goals, while 17 is still a lot lol. My point is that the center depth is getting much weaker, weakening the team. Teams will now focus more on him since hes better than a Zacha/Coyle/Frederic/whoever centers him... smh LMAOOOO

17% really isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things. He'll still likely play with Marchand and Marchand for years as been the focal point of the line from a production perspective.

I really don’t see Bergeron’s absence having a negative effect on DeBrusk’s production the only thing I’d be concerned about regressing is EV defense

Well that’s kinda crazy considering Bergeron still produced incredibly well lol. Everything about debrusk points to him regressing. Boston overachieved in every way too, the entire roster is due for regression in some sense
