Description
Nylander 8x9.25m
Matthews 8x13m

Not sure what the market is for remaining FA’s, but I’d go bargain shopping after these contracts are traded, hypothetically.
Kane and Toews on this team, if they’re willing, would be such good fits as well, if they want to take discounts.

Kyle Davidson wants to surround Bedard with competent players, and Lafferty was awesome there. Makes sense to me. They have enough picks for the next 3 years anyways.

Hawks have enough competent players to play w/ Bedard. They'll let the Leafs keep those guys to play w/ Knies.

No...Jarnkrok is very useful, more than Kane at this stage, and Laff needs to get a chance to play for a longer period of time... And until they find a defensemen better than Brodie, they need to keep him and Bear isn't moving that needle

Yeah, it's obvious how you do it though, buy Murray out... or ship Muzzin's LTIR contract to Arizona and a 5th for a 7th and have the 'oh, Murray injured for the rest of the season again' sign Sammy and look for an upgrade on Brodie for a lesser cap hit

Hawks are terrible, and look to be for a while to come. The fact that nhl has setup a system where the garbage teams (with cap) hold the league ransom makes no sense tk me but congratulations Gerry! Really interested to see how bedard shakes out - watched him in world juniors and for large parts of game he didn’t impact much and then in 2 or 3 shifts, he single handedly won the game for us. 50-50 on if he’ll become superstar

Buying Murray out hurts the team next year when Nylander and Matthews new contracts kick in. Gotta find a way to trade it I think.

Fair enough. Ideally you full off a trade like this and fill out the roster. If you buyout Murray you likely have to trade Jarnkrok to save that $2m next year.

Well isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black, seems someone forgets the Leafs tanking for Matthews.
Funny how some people had no issues with “the system” when it benefited their team but NOW it’s a problem. 😂

As for the original proposal, it is just horrendous. The Hawks are not taking all of the Leafs surplus garbage proposed for nothing. Murray and Brodie will cost at least two 1st round picks to move with their respective cap hits and actual $$ owed. Before you say it, Lafferty and Jarnkrok do not offset that cost.

Hawks laugh at this offer. They already have 3 RD, 2 goalies, and a full team of bottom 6 players. This does absolutely nothing but blow all their cap space.

Of course, TOR's cap situation doesn't have anything to do with how they've managed their roster now, right? s/ The entire NHL could see their situation coming when Tavares was signed. But you instead blame others for TOR's mis-management. Good grief.

My problems do not begin with someone else. Full stop.

League wide, there are cap problems. Not just the leafs bud; other sports leagues are paying guys like Fred van vleet $40+M but best hockey player in the league capped at $12.5 and that is hurting his team (oilers are cap strapped). Leafs signed Tavares pre Covid when everyone thought the cap was going up not flat lining for multiple years. Not blaming the hawks - just pointing out the ridiculous system - there is no money left except for teams like Hawks (other teams too - Ducks, sharks, Yotes) that suck so they can hold the league ransom. Just a stupid, stupid system

Well, I wonder when owners/management of NHL teams will simply stop believing that "the cap is going up, big time" in the future. What if the world's economies crater from here? (A realistic possibility, IMO.) Will the cap go up then?

After the Hawks signed Kane and Toews to their big contracts ("because the cap imminently was going to rise dramatically"), they had to try and make it work when that assessment changed. Was very tough having to sell off good player after good player to stay compliant with a stagnant cap... It may be a stupid system, but every team has to face it.

    Cheers

The cap was going up by 2.5-6% every year after Kane/Toews signed . The cap went up a total of 2.5% the past 4 years. Not comparable; but it also sucked that nhl set up a system where team like hawks had to be torn apart - who knows how many cups they could have run if not for Gerry and the greedy owners. No other sports league (aside from fringe sports) has such a regressive system. Every team has to abide by rules but some teams (crap teams) benefit more than others
