Detroit most likely doesn't make the playoffs as it stands now. Petry doesn't change that. The team trying to rid themselves of Petry was in a fight with Detroit the last month of the season for a wildcard spot. If he would improve Detroit, Pit wouldn't offer him up to Detroit due to him improving their chances of passing the Pens. It is a backwards way of thinking.

Detroit filled holes this summer, and SY has stayed the course by admitting he will overpay for FA, is tight sealed with draft picks, and cares a great deal for AAV and term. He signed Ghost as a PP guy and 2RD who can be flipped at the deadline. He signed Holl as a minute munching stop gap until the draft picks are ready (ASP/Gibson/Tuo). Lindstrom is back as a last shot younger player. Edvinsson is about ready, Wallinder and Johansson not far behind. Combine that with the Walman/Maata extensions.. Chiarot from last season, there is no more room.

Petry is a pure cap dump for Detroit. We don't want him nor do we need him. Our roster is full.

The cost for us taking him off your books is two 1st round picks.

But Detroit isn't a playoff team this year and if you think the addition of Petry helps Detroit get to the playoffs. I'd say ask a Pittsburgh fan how well that worked out for them.
