Van would pass. I believe they could have claimed Kovacevic and did not. If there were a center instead of Hoffman, that would make more sense for Van.

Or, Toronto could buyout Murray and not lose out on Minten and Niemela.

Then lose millions in cap space next year. You speak it like there is no downside to a buyout

Murray won’t be picked up and Mtl can’t buyout him out this year. The window was missed without an arb case.

This trade ain’t it. Keep Dvo as he’s injured the 1st month and recoup asset at the TDL

I speak like having 2M in dead cap space in a year when the cap is going to rise significantly is a far better outcome than sending two of your top prospects away just to "dump" a contract.

No it isn’t lmao those prospects are meagre in lacklustre prospect pool at best to hold a dead money contract and retention on a top9 Center but you keep speaking away

I believe Kovacevic significantly improve since he was claimed, he did only have 4 NHL games of experience at that time. Also that trade clear a little cap space for canucks. But ok then too bad if it don't makes sens for Vancouver, thanks for your comment.

Well there is a price to pay to ''dump'' contracts. Also this trade isn't just to dump Murray, Dvorak retained has value.

Buyout period is ended. Looks like having dead money on a team that struggle with the salary cap wasn't an option.

I've heard a lot about how Habs players have value ever since they got the 1st round pick for Chariot. I'm sure he does to someone.

Toronto should be keeping their prospects, seeing as it's already "lack luster". Or, at the very least, packaging them to upgrade. Not add them in to offload a contract.

Well having signed Domi/Bertuzzi put Toronto 5m ish ahead of cap ceiling and they still have Samsonov to sign. Treliving will have to find a way to offload contract, and since he's stuck, other GM should take advantage of that and ask leafs to pay something to ''help em respect the cap''

Trying to find where I read that there is a second buyout window, so long as the team goes to arbitration with one of their players. Struggling to find it.

Yup, Treliving does have some work to do to get under the cap. Doesn't mean he has to make deals like this.

Leafs are already cap strapped and have to give matthews a raise in 12 months

As it sits right now, they have almost 47M in space next season. I'm sure there's room to fit him in.

But not enough to fill the roster with talent and have enough for marner's raise. And Nylanders replacement or resigning near 10m. So Matthews 13m, Marner 12m and Nylander 10m, thats 25m of your 47 right there. Thats leaves the leafs with 9 forwards and 3 d men.

Dont argue about cap space value. According to genius over here. Cap space is an easy fix that is why no one is even talking about cap space being an issue this offseason or next..i mean..nobody is talking about thatshakes head
