C’mon - you can’t give Jack McBain an offer sheet worth a 1st and 3rd and not know that is where the questions are coming from.

That Murray trade is certainly not a good idea. And won't see anything like that package coming out of Carolina for Debrincat.

It's the KK move... Bring in somebody for an overpayment for a year and then sign him to a more team-friendly deal because of the RFA status. He's a very solid player and brings some grit and toughness to the team and he's very versatile in where you put him. He was pretty good in Arizona and we need more players like him

I mean I agree the Murray trade is not the best idea in retrospect and I could take a little off of the DeBrincat transaction.

Honestly see the Leafs buying out Murray. Already so depleted of draft picks from these playoff runs that went nowhere. Would pay Murray 650k this season and 2 million next on a buyout, makes more sense to me. That’s a lot of kk ey for McBain

He doesn’t have the pedigree or ceiling of KK so it’s not a good decision. Trading a first and a third for him is silly. Paying him 6M is silly. I understand the concept you’re going after but the target doesn’t make sense for it.

Also no reason to take on Murray for a bunch of mid picks. I doubt the leafs would do it in the first place over a buyout but even still the canes shouldn’t do it.

Other comments - that third pair and depth needs some work too.

I can see why wanting to take on McBain might not be appealing... I just see a very good fit between McBain and Carolina given his skill set and what Carolina needs
    Fair enough about Murray.
I mean Staal is probably one of the better one-year guys that you are going to be able to get on the market but I could also see them trying to solve that long-term and the depth pieces are basically just placeholders

Mcbain would be great. Unfortunately the reality is ARI has no incentive to trade him unless you overpay, like in this situation. But he’s not the level of player you should overpay for imo.

Staal would be fine as a 7D but I’d want to address third pair differently. I like guys like OEL to try running PP2 and playing sheltered minutes. Soucy, Seeler could be good options although missing the PPQB flexibility. TDA probably still happens though so that’s likely who will fill in that role.

Yah... I'm guessing dealing with Arizona is going to be like pulling teeth this off-season. Seeler would be nice but I don't how much it would cost to have the flyers cough him up.

Ooof this is bad. McBain isn’t even a KK high potential like player. The guy is an old school grinder that will be lucky to get more than 2 million a year one time in his career. You triple down and give him that? Woof.

Then you give up way, way too much for Cat who isn’t a fit here.

I’ve done some mocks for a third and Philly fans seem generally fine with that. He’s cheap which helps out a lot but honestly doesn’t matter too much for us next year so maybe they’d get a better offer from a more cap strapped team.

McBain is a one-year bad contract which allows us to have his RFA rights next off-season... I've seen people say that he has top-six potential and have even compared him to Tom Wilson. In his first full season in the show he potted 12 goals and in his last season with Boston College he was above a PPG that doesn't exactly scream old-school grinder
I get the D is a concern with DeBrincat but he showed in 21-22 that he can at least play above-average defense and RBA can coach defense really really well

There is no justification for giving McBain a 1st and 3rd offer sheet. The dude squeaked out 26 points and played 4th line minutes on one of the worst teams for having quality nhl players.
