My understanding from Seravelli is that Grier is looking to clear the cap due to ownership not wanting to spend money on Karlsson during a rebuild. So retaining that much is likely out of the question. Ideally they would take back a bad contract or two to offset the money and maximize the return. I'd say in this case of 50% retention at least the next two 1st rounder picks and a 2nd. I think at that cap hit for four more years Karlsson is almost certainly good value.

Was Seravalli saying that was a rumor he heard, or was it just speculation? To be honest, it sounds like the kind of "insider" thing that is easy to just throw out there. Hasso is a multi-billionaire and a hockey guy, I have a hard time thinking he would force Grier into a worse trade when a good one would mean accelerating the rebuild and getting the team back to making money faster. Its just not the best way to capitalize on that asset from either a money or hockey perspective.

My pure speculation is that Grier is willing to retain quite a bit more than he's ever said publicly because its better to keep a card like that close to your chest. You want the other team to ask what your price is for more retention.

If Hasso is a hockey guy, he's a bad one. Wilson had been making terrible decisions for years and he was allowed to do it. Also, ownership forces decisions ALL THE TIME! There's a number of teams that should likely be rebuilding now and aren't due to ownership meddling (VAN, PIT, WPG, CGY, etc.).

I don’t see SJ retaining that much money. And Dallas can’t take on that much money. I don’t think it’s a fit tbh
