For Ottawa to get good value for Debrincat, three things have to line up: He has to be willing to sign with the team that trades for him, they have to be able to fit his new contract within their cap plan, and they have to be willing to give up the kind of player or players that Ottawa wants. (I don't think they want futures, because that's what they gave up to get him.) I think the number of teams that can check all three of these boxes is very small, so there’s not going to be much of a bidding war for him.
I could see New York maybe being willing to part with Lafreniere to get Debrincat – Lafreniere may never reach the potential they saw when they drafted him and Debrincat is a proven talent – but throwing in the 1st-round draft pick and two prospects too seems like too big of a package if there’s no bidding war. New York doesn’t have to trade Lafreniere, and I’m not sure they’re willing to give up on him yet unless they're having difficulty signing him, so I’m thinking this would more likely have to be a one-for-one for them to agree to it.
