Luke Kunin is a good player, and we have no reason to trade him. Marcus Pettersson is a LD and would have to compete with Vlasic, Ferraro, Kynyzhov, Simek, Thrun, Muhk, Knaizev, Ohkotiuk etc. We don't need him and don't have room for him. There's no chance we'd pay a 4th round pick to give up a player we like for a player we don't need.

Yes, Pettersson > Kunin.

But Kunin + a 4th are worth more to SJ than a player who won't accomplish anything on the Sharks but to push a young player out of the lineup, and then leave in free agency in two years before we're even out of the rebuild. We need our young defensemen to get games, and not to spend assets to temporarily bring in someone ahead of them. Sharks can't afford to be doing trades that don't help the rebuild.

Sharks have about 8 NHL level/NHL ready LD. Not a chance we add another one and give up a 4th to do so. This is a no brainer pass for San Jose. Not even remotely intriguing.

I get why the sharks dont want this trade but on paper pens are getting fleeced and this isn't going to happen anymore. hextall is gone luckily

I will not doubt that he is the better player, he is. But it makes no sense for the Sharks timeline, thats all this is.
