After what Joe Veleno pulled at the worlds, Detroit should take that and run.

Not totally tracking his overall value tbh, I know he's a decent 3/4C with some grit and half decent stats. Yeah he did a bad thingy so I probably overpaid him by a mil or so

Ottawa paid 7OA + + for Cat. If Cat says he wants to go to Detroit and Detroit wants him, they'll have to pay.

Veleno is expendable to Det given their hefty core. Zadina is an obvious disappointment. Plus a 1st and a 2nd from the heavy draft capital is nothing.

This is pretty on par for most ACGM trades for Cat to Det.

7OA last year is not that much better than 17 OA this year with this particular draft. Ottawa also got a 2nd and a 3rd. This is asking for a 1st, 2nd and 2 young roster players with potential to develop into more.
DeBrincat’s value is lower than it was last year. Ottawa traded for a 41 goal scorer at a 6.4M cap hit. They are trading away a 27 goal scorer with a 8-9M cap hit. That lowers his trade value. Also, if Cat wants to go to Detroit, Ottawa has little to no leverage. Cat does not have to sign an extension. He can walk and play a year in the KHL then go to Detroit without needing to overpay in a trade or (and more likely) Ottawa takes what they can get from him and a team trades for him for 1 year then he goes to FA. I’d pay a 1st and 2nd MAX. Is his potential worth more? Absolutely. But given the circumstances, his trade value is limited to less than what Ottawa paid.
